I am the Board representative on the WLA Professional Development Committee that oversees the mentoring program. I'm happy to serve as a liaison between LLC and WLA around this.

Thanks,
Erica

Yes, WLA is very active with library advocacy statewide and I know that they'd love to see more activity from those of us in academic libraries, especially now with the ACRL-WA move to WLA.

For us in LLC to try to create our own mentoring process would be daunting. We don't have the capacity to build that structure AND participate in it, so this way we could be mentors and focus on building that relationship, not creating the structure at the same time. And our librarians (or us) could apply to be mentored and benefit in the same way. I think we should encourage our librarians to get in the mix, also. I even participated in a worldwide mentorship program at one point and had a public librarian in South Africa who was really helpful to me in my early years as a librarian. So a cross academia-public library mentorship might be interesting also. Think about it! Gerie

I would love to see more collaborations with WLA from LLC. I know this group serves an essential function for our CTC network, but I know WLA is very active and involved in advocacy and legislative work on behalf of libraries. I would love to participate in mentoring activities for newer and BIPOC librarian members. Thank you for this wonderful suggestions, Gerie!

This is a great idea, Gerie. When I worked in Oregon, OLA had something similar that all libraries - including academic - could participate in. I know it was a very successful program.

I'm sure that WLA would benefit from this group's input, particularly in looking for opportunities for BIPOC faculty mentoring. Thanks for sharing!

I know we're all stretched at this point of the quarter/academic year, but there appears to be a session coming up about a new, refreshed WLA Mentorship program. The idea of mentorship came up at our recent LLC meeting, so maybe if we participated in the WLA Mentorship program, we could do it within their already-created structure?

Just a thought.
