[LIBRARYDIR] [EXTERNAL] - Re: Plagiarism Tools

Seattle Central's librarians have long fielded requests for these tools, and vendors market aggressively to faculty and higher administration.

For us, these tools have been low priority compared to providing access to content that supports the curriculum. We also advocate pedagogical strategies over plagiarism tools. We've heard good arguments for some positive uses, but the cost is difficult to justify out of the library budget. From the eLearning perspective, our response has been similar.

For those not also on eLC, here is a list with prices that has been gathered.

  *   BC - $13,000 (based on 10,736 FTE) - Simcheck
  *   LCC - $2/user - Unicheck
  *   Bates - $2.35/user - Unicheck
  *   TCC - $1.50/user - Unicheck
  *   WVC - $11,000 (based on 3000FTE) - Unicheck

I personally think it is better to help faculty design assignments that decrease opportunities for plagiarism and promote academic integrity to students.

Back in November, there was also an extensive email exchange on the IC list about this as well and it seemed that many of them were advocating for faculty improving assessment strategies.

Thanks,

Erica

Hi All,

Shoreline does not use a plagiarism tool. It would really be a faculty call to purchase and implement.

The App store team is aware of the interest in Plagiarism Tools. They've got a long list of items they would love to add the site.

See you all soon, Leslie

Hi Heath,

BTC does not subscribe to a plagiarism checker. There has been some recent interest in Turnitin, but so far it doesn't look like anyone wants to pay for the service. I wonder if the SBCTC Ed Tech & Open is or would consider adding academic honesty tool contracts to its App Store Commons. We could mention it to Mark Jenkins.

Subject: Plagiarism Tools

Hello!

We are evaluating our plagiarism tool at Bellevue College. We were using Vericite (now Turnitin) and are now using the in-Canvas tool SimCheck. This tool is very expensive to maintain annually (~$15K) and we would like to start the conversation of dropping the plagiarism tool altogether. When I was with LWTech we did not have a plagiarism checker and used freely available tools.

Do any of you use plagiarism tools (standalone and/or available through Canvas)? Which tool(s) are you using?

Thanks in advance!
