Summaries of each round of testing, with links to more detailed data are here:

https://www.oclc.org/realm/research.html

Test 4 results: Results show that after six days of quarantine the SARS-CoV-2 virus was still detected on all five materials tested. When compared to Test 1, which resulted in nondetectable virus after three days on an unstacked hardcover book, softcover book, plastic protective cover, and DVD case, the results of Test 4 highlight the effect of stacking and its ability to prolong the survivability of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Test 5 results: Results show that after eight days of quarantine, SARS-CoV-2 virus was still detected on leather and synthetic leather materials. For the polyolefin fabric and nylon webbing, only the amount of virus after the initial 1 hour of drying time could be measured. No data for the cotton fabric could be collected or reported.

Also a correction and clarification… the 4th Round of REALM testing found detectable levels of virus on Day 6 (not Day 7) of testing. Testing was halted after Day 6, so there’s no information from the 4th round of testing about how much longer the virus survived after Day 6.

I highly recommend signing up for the email updates to get the results from each round of testing.

Kirsti, Thank you so much for this information. Do you have a link to the REALM testing results you referenced below? I hadn’t heard this before and am very curious.
Have a great day.

North Seattle and Seattle Central are quarantining for 9 days based on the 4th round of REALM testing which found detectable levels of virus on Day 7 of testing for items that had been stored stacked on top of or next to each other instead of spread out. Since we don’t have the space to spread out returned materials to allow for a shorter quarantine period, I recommended we err on the side of caution.

South Seattle isn’t quarantining because South Seattle doesn’t have the staffing to support any in-person services while the college is operating remotely. They’re not doing any check out or returns at all.

While we have a procedure in place that states 72 hours, it’s actually a week because that’s how separated our curbside appointments are.

We quarantine all returned books for a week. Our reserves check out for a week and then quarantine for a week when returned. Our main collections usually check out for 3 weeks and then quarantine for a week when returned.

Hi Dawn,
We circulate all materials quarterly. If an item is returned early, it is quarantined for 72 hours.

Thanks!

Dear Colleagues,

Me again.

How long are you quarantining returned materials? We have been quarantining for 3 days based (somewhat) on info about COVID-19 from the Realm Project, but the Governor now says minimum 24 hours.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Dawn
