[LIBRARYDIR] LibGuides for Library Website?

We use a redirect link instead of a landing page for fewer clicks.

I’ve not heard of adding disclaimers. That’s a new one. Maybe it would help to share a quick review of academic libraries’ practices?

Thank you, Wade. I think we will settle on an institutional landing page, with links out to LibGuides. Right now, my college is suggesting that the landing page provide a disclaimer about all third party vendors linked to the library site. Has anyone ever seen such disclaimers for links to third party vendors? I’m concerned that a disclaimer will discourage students and faculty from clicking on library databases, etc.

The “static page on institutional site, linking to a libguides site” seems to be a pretty standard approach at lots of academic libraries, based on my experience both within the Alliance and now with the CTCs.

I know that Big Bend is another of the CTCs that has gone this direction, with a lot of recent work on their libguides site by Rhonda Kitchens… http://libguides.bigbend.edu/home<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flibguides.bigbend.edu%2Fhome&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc21047b63b1d4e0c49a008d7ed2a6191%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C637238638605578428&sdata=xpusVQCbQpRrf0vqvuWehE1tlCEM2ctyzOnqFKoOz1U%3D&reserved=0>

In fact, the library link in their campus site menus takes the user straight to the libguides site, with no intervening status page. And the transition is pretty seamless.

The one thing I’ll add, I find it’s a really nice touch when institutions make sure that navigation attempts commonly made to find the library online, like the following, resolve successfully to the library site, regardless of the platform:

http://library.yourinstitution.edu<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flibrary.yourinstitution.edu%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc21047b63b1d4e0c49a008d7ed2a6191%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C637238638605578428&sdata=XG%2BwEPPsGTIf0R9gAsR9hx6DqHqFc0stJ7zGjg%2FYbck%3D&reserved=0>

and:

http://www.yourinstitution.edu/libary<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yourinstitution.edu%2Flibary&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc21047b63b1d4e0c49a008d7ed2a6191%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C637238638605578428&sdata=r5c9GtTp1cUXelO4FyqGSPMnrUOic6IWLgckfwzqrDk%3D&reserved=0>

without having to know a more specific URL like:

http://libguides.yourinstitution.edu<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flibguides.yourinstitution.edu%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc21047b63b1d4e0c49a008d7ed2a6191%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C637238638605588387&sdata=TiyDygysuGbAQhzSENEETcT2iglfFXjMJCd%2BHVts%2BNc%3D&reserved=0> or similar.

IT departments are typically happy to set up redirections for those in the campus DNS service, upon request.

Hi Mindy,

At my last college, similar to GRC, I had a main page<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bluecc.edu%2Facademics%2Flibrary&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cc21047b63b1d4e0c49a008d7ed2a6191%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C637238638605598345&sdata=B6fy8%2FIhv9jebNtuBugB%2FS7i8GJCoDdRP2bNhzEjBwc%3D&reserved=0> that was through the college but everything you clicked took you into the libguide interface. It was the easiest way for the library to manage their own content.

Hi all,

If any of you are using LibGuides for your library website, would you please send me a private email? I have seen examples of this and wondered how widespread it is. Without going into details about our situation, it would be helpful to know or have examples to share.

Thank you,

Mindy
