Thank you for sharing that perspective, Amy. I think that is something we can all advocate for, and we can participate in the writing and/or review of our reports to ensure it happens.
During our Year 7 evaluation visit last week (with the old standards), I was reminded that the library remains the only student learning service/department that is specifically called out in the new standards. While that is not as ideal as the current standards, it will be great to work together to continue maximizing the recognition of the library as the new standards are implemented.
In regard to the BAS rubric, we can take this as an opportunity to design from a place of student learning and the library's essential role in it at the BAS level. Instead of being restricted by the standards, we can revise and refine them to better fit students' learning needs. I would love to be a part of that work (but will unfortunately miss the BAS conference).

Hi all,
I may be the lone voice with this opinion, but I'm OK with the changes. I think overall the NWCCU standards are more coherent and concise now. I see the academic library mission woven throughout standard one rather than treated as something separate. The pared down standards could actually be freeing if we're creative and thoughtful about tying our libraries' practices to achievement and learning.
Cheers,
Amy

Yes, we all were quite shocked by the changes to accreditation, Heath. We went through a series of discussions to draft recommendations for NWCCU, hoping that they would listen and make some changes. We also collaborated with ACRL OR & WA, as well as Orbis Cascade Alliance and additional regional library groups. We all submitted similar recommendations.
Unfortunately, NWCCU only made one modification. It added an ambiguous phrase "qualified personnel" to the one standard about collections. In my opinion, very disappointing. That said, I feel like we responded strongly as a group and did what we could considering the circumstances.

Thank you, that would be great. Looks like that was before my interim dean time.

Subject: [LIBRARYDIR] NWCCU Standards for Libraries
All:
I learned at a meeting this morning that the NWCCU accreditation standards for libraries/resources is going down from 4 to 1. Check out the new standards here: https://www.nwccu.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2020-NWCCU-ERs-and-Standards-1.pdf<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nwccu.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2019%2F08%2F2020-NWCCU-ERs-and-Standards-1.pdf&data=02%7C01%7Cheath.hayden%40bellevuecollege.edu%7C7d264af3660a446edb5d08d75bd94555%7Cf94c251c1347422eb3ea8ac56befd6cb%7C0%7C1%7C637078861044580444&sdata=%2FPeVK0xkvPAaMxexBuvTvQFdUI30DldYnW4wqAiYBmw%3D&reserved=0>
One of our librarians pointed out that the library instructional focus has been dropped. It seems minimally representative of what we do.
What are your thoughts?
