[LIBRARYDIR] WACTCLC staff question

Vivienne,

This is good to hear.

My first reaction to Cheyenne’s message was to check the SBCTC site to see where that work is being done at the state level.

It does feel like something appropriate for SBCTC to address, given that accessibility crosses all institutional departments, and all institutions.

Also, just a reminder about WACTCLC… The existing and previous salaries (mine, currently; and previously, Shellie’s as well) are paid by participants in the Alma / Primo program, to support participants in that program. Only 25 out of 32 CTC institutions currently participate and pay into that program (with a few of the bigger institutions, TCC, Spokane, and Clark, as non-participants).

Certainly, a new program, with the same (or different) set of CTC participants could be set up to hire paid staff for other types of work. But it wouldn’t necessarily be a direct re-allocation of money previously paid to Shellie.

At least, that’s my initial interpretation of how WACTCLC would apply to this topic.

FYI, several of us were recently invited to an ed tech kick off meeting with Mark Jenkins and there are plans to meet regularly starting fall.
I believe one of his areas of interest is providing that kind of accessibility, VPAT and software vetting service to the entire SBCTC system.

At an Access360 convening meeting yesterday, we were discussing the work involved in testing technologies for accessibility compliance (VPATS, WCAG 2.0, etc.) and that trusted testers are really well suited for this work. It got me thinking about our libraries and how we all use many of the same programs/databases that require a thorough testing and then a “stamp of approval” for accessibility that we can all stand behind. Then, this got me thinking back to a conversation we had maybe a year or two ago in LLC/WACTCLC about the idea of shared specialty staffing that we could all use or benefit from.

I know we are all currently seeing savings from the consortium not filling Shellie’s vacant position and savings are great. But would WACTCLC members be interested discussing the idea of temporarily hiring a “Trusted Tester” for library resources so that we could all know which of our resources meet required benchmarks for accessibility?

Just throwing it out there for discussion.
