[LIBRARYDIR] From the CLAMS moderator

If the name of the group changes this shouldn't be an issue as the new listserv would have the new name. Kinda like CLAMS 2.0, Heath. :)

It would be a shame to have to exclude folks who would have no need to join WLA but might provide valuable input and information. I'm thinking of folks like Boyoung Chae from the State Board, etc.

Maybe we just agree that the conversations that take place on the new WLA listserv relate only to WLA activities and events?

The Library Directors/Deans currently have two different listervs and the eLearning council does as well. Not really a big deal although sometimes we have to remind each other which conversations belong on which listserv.

Based on my conversations with WLA, the chief concern is maintaining a free and membership-only listserv with the same names. There could be confusion if there is a CLAMS section through WLA that has its own conversations going and a CLAMS listserv open to anyone (with the parameters Marji has identified and shared here). I think these are legitimate concerns on both sides. There is no reason or need to do away with the CLAMS listserv as it is. There is a need to safely and securely transfer the reins of leadership and fiscal management over to WLA. This is what was voted on and agreed to by the CLAMS membership.

Part of the transitioning of CLAMS to WLA was to sunset the listserv at some point in the future due to CLAMS joining WLA as a section. First, we need to have at least 10 WLA members buy in for the section in WLA. Second, we need to come up with a different name for CLAMS 2.0 through WLA.

Subject: [Clams-l] From the CLAMS moderator

>From the CLAMS-L moderator:

* CLAMS-L lives on an SBCTC server

* SBCTC has never charged CLAMS a fee for providing this service

* Individuals subscribe and unsubscribe themselves from CLAMS-L.

* CLAMS-L is moderated, so subscription requests are approved by the moderator. Requests from WACTC addresses are approved. Requests from other addresses such as Gmail are investigated to verify identity before approval. Vendor requests to subscribe are rejected.

Answering a few questions:

* Can CLAMS-L continue as a list hosted by SBCTC?

Yes -- we haven't requested to or been asked by SBCTC to shut down our list. Here are all the lists hosted by SBCTC: https://lists.ctc.edu/mailman/listinfo/

* Will we lose some folks in the transition when CLAMS becomes an WLA section?

Yes - from Heath's 3/8/19 email: "Once the CLAMS Section listserv under WLA is live, up, and running this will only be available to those who are a member of this Section of WLA."

Currently, there are 250 CLAM-L subscribers. This group is larger than the number of CTC librarians expected to join WLA. Because CTC libraries were members of CLAMS, everyone working in those libraries was automatically a member and therefore, eligible to subscribe to the listserv. In addition, job-seeking librarians, iSchool students, a few UW librarians, and CTC librarians using personal email addresses are approved members of the list.

Editorializing

It's not clear whether or not the WACTC library administrators intend to join WLA as organizational members. It's unclear how the WLA Organizational Membership applies to academic libraries since we don't have library trustees. Might academic librarians be considered to be "associates"? At the very least, three people from each library can pay member-rate registration.

As members of CLAMS-L, subscribers don't "pay to play", but members of the CLAMS Section of WLA must pay to get access to the CLAMS Section listserv. The current CLAMS-L list serves a broader group of librarians and staff working in or seeking to work in community and technical college libraries. It's a vital communication tool that benefits all of us, not just those who can afford to or are inclined to become WLA members.

Respectfully submitted,

I'll be curious to see where the division of content is drawn with two listservs.

Isn't it still a subscribe/unsubscribe unmoderated public list? It has been a lot of years since I was the listserv admin but I don't remember approving requests or removing folks who hadn't paid their dues or anything like that. Maybe that's why they gave the job to someone else :)

Someone will need to keep the distribution list up to date and it may be duplicative if WLA is also sending information out. .
