[LIBRARYDIR] [EXTERNAL*]-RE: ProQuest Video Platform

It's good to hear that it's getting used. We did notice on the title list that there are a lot of titles related to our programs. I think we'd have to do some kind of survey of our faculty directors and chairs, allowing for a review of Kanopy and AVON.

We did so much advertising around Kanopy and got very little interest beyond 5 or so faculty, making its pay per use model actually pretty ideal. I would be cautious to commit to a flat rate that ends up being more expensive, especially if we only get 5 or so faculty using AVON.

OK. Thanks for the explanation. I had similar thoughts, but I saw plenty that was academic content and some of our faculty are using titles that might appear on the History Channel and we do teach a film appreciation class. The pricing structure is completely different from Kanopy so we won't be worried about being charged for popular viewing like some places I have heard.

Thanks for the question, Mindy. During the presentation, it seemed like the majority of the content that was being shown on the landing pages of AVON were for more popular and not-so-academic titles, including publishers like History Channel. For us, I would hope that the product was serving the academic/instructional needs of the community primarily, and not mimicking an entertainment website . . . that said, I am curious about those who do use it and if faculty and students are engaging in it to support coursework.

We turned off a lot of the "popular" publishers on Kanopy specifically because we didn't want their titles to be generating the main costs in that budget.

Hi Greg,

Could you elaborate what you mean about customizing the interface to look "more academic and less Netflixy?" It is my understanding that ProQuest was going for a Netflex experience. I'm curious to learn what aspects you would like to change.

Thanks,
Mindy

Just following up. Just did a webinar with Kathleen and Dana at ProQuest. The functionality of the platform looks impressive (though of course I imagine most people won't use the most impressive features, as usual). Not sure about the title lists and the ability to customize to make the platform more academic and less Netflixy, so we'll see . . . I'm curious about what the next steps are. I soft-agreed to start a trial in mid-September.

I met with Brad Fisk from ProQuest at ALA. He would be happy to set up a demo for the consortium. I'm happy to set up a WebEx for WACTCLC.
(My inclination would be to do a demo over the summer, with the knowledge that we might want to repeat it in the fall when more faculty are present.)

We have done a demo with AVON in the past, as well as a subject collection demo for Anthropology, but we have not moved on adding this to our streaming video options.

Ahniwa, I would love to hear your thoughts on FilmPlatform. I looked into them when I was looking for streaming video services.

Funny you should ask: we just had a demo with them yesterday, and we'll do a trial in August (too busy at the moment to deal with it). I think we would be very interested in a group subscription rate.

Amy

We just finished a 3-month trial of AVON and are purchasing it for the coming year to run alongside FOD, FilmPlatform, and a limited Kanopy implementation. It would be nice if we can just get one tool for all the video, but that's not the case in the current market.

AVON has gotten pretty good use during our trial and appears worth the price. We're purchasing through Orbis so that may help us out in the cost.

it is worth keeping in mind though that WSL's contract is with ProQuest and while I'm not sure about the previous contract, past contracts had language that libraries who buy additional ProQuest products should receive an additional discount.

Subject: [LIBRARYDIR] ProQuest Video Platform
Hey all,

I was just emailed by our ProQuest rep about Academic Video Online (AVON)<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Falexanderstreet.com%2Fproducts%2Facademic-video-online&data=01%7C01%7Cheath.hayden%40bellevuecollege.edu%7Ccd9d9f93eced4d145a8e08d7056d1d71%7Cf94c251c1347422eb3ea8ac56befd6cb%7C1&sdata=yhnmQ9W4KQZLpwG8DY7BOsQG5pBWQ4ztH6II4gWToqg%3D&reserved=0>, their online video service. There was a recent ALA thread about how some folks are using it over other platforms, like Kanopy, so LWTech will take a look and probably start a free trial in the near future.

Anyway, I asked the rep if there had been chats about system-wide bargaining and that isn't the case, but if there were 5-10 interested CTCs, a mini buying club deal could be entertained. So my question for this thread is, who is considering this product and has yet to start a subscription? For the system as a whole, what are your thoughts on the "mini buying club deal" as a concept-is it a worthwhile approach to databases? I will say that group purchasing came up during the recent Technical College Libraries Meeting last quarter as something various librarians would like to investigate.

And another question: for those of you already using AVON, how is it?

Greg
