Hi Stephen,

If we don’t offer programs for academic librarians, the WLA Conference will continue to appear to favor public and school librarians.  I suggest that you encourage Jesse Abdenour to submit a proposal.  Then you can encourage academic librarians to attend.

Very true – there is almost nothing in the current WLA conference schedule that is related to our work.  But how do we get other people to submit proposals? And other research<http://journalism.uoregon.edu/member/abdenour-jesse/> related to the production and consumption of news media that might inform our efforts to provide media literacy education to our students.  In May he did a presentation “Trust matters: Public perceptions of journalistic roles in the United States” at the International Communication Association conference in Prague – something like that would be great for this conference theme!  He has done several other presentations that I would like to have attended, provided no international travel was involved, but they were all at conferences related to his field of communication. He is local, so it doesn’t seem like a wild fantasy, but I also don’t think a random suggestion from a community college librarian will persuade him to submit a proposal to a conference largely aimed at public and school librarians.

The conference theme is “Charting the Unknown Together,” which reflects the current climate of change, injustice, and uncertainty that affects library professionals and patrons alike. Together, we’re hopeful that our collaboration and camaraderie can help us navigate these new waters.

All proposals from academic, public, school, and special library staff and advocates will be considered, as will those from community partners. Please reach out to the dynamic presenters in your communities or share your own skills and experience by leading a session or workshop.

  *   Proposals are due no later than 12:00pm, Monday, October 29.
  *   The Program Contact will be notified of the outcome by November 19.
  *   Programs may take the form of half- or full-day preconferences, or 75-minute regular sessions.
  *   Presenters should request approval from their employers to attend the conference before agreeing to serve as program speaker.
