[LIBRARYDIR] How does your school support its Library Directors?

Same here - except I have no dedicated travel allocation. I just make it work within my budget.

Hi Greg,

I didn't really know how to respond to your question, but Monica says it well. I have an allocation for travel, but I usually overspend it. As long as I don't overspend the total library budget, no one here cares if I overspend my travel budget. Travel varies each year and the library looks for partners to stretch our funds so we try to make it work. You might try talking with other LWT administrators about their travel funds.

Greg,

Like Stan, my professional development and travel for council meetings has typically been paid from the library budget. The allocated amount is woefully inadequate, so we always overspend it, but in terms of our overall budget we always end the year in the black. No one outside the library is monitoring our spending at the object or sub-object level, so we do what we need to do.
In terms of making a case for resource allocation, I would look at other LWT administrators whose jobs include the expectation of participation in and travel to council and commission meetings. If those folks have sufficient travel funds allocated, so should you.

Good luck!

I'm not clear what you mean here--- my short answer is "I have a travel budget, for which I request an amount based upon my best prediction of what will be needed." But I suspect that answer is a bit useless for you!

Are you looking for a formula of some kind?

Greetings, LLC,

In reviewing LWTech's increasingly-narrow library budget, I am wondering how your school supports its library directors, specifically with attendance to LLC meetings, professional development, etc. Faculty resources are one thing, but for the director position I don't see the same model of resource allocation.

If you have insight into how money is allocated for your positions, that would be very helpful.
