Hi Cheyenne,

This is what I used last summer:

These would be my instructions to the applicants:

Teaching Demonstration: Please prepare a 15-minute lesson for instructing a freshman class addressing the following typical research question: "How have human activities impacted the ocean?"* You may use any of the databases available at the Skagit Valley College Libraries website (library.skagit.edu<http://library.skagit.edu>).** You will be asked to present the lesson to the committee. The committee will be your students for the purposes of the demonstration. A computer with internet connectivity and projector will be available. Please let us know if you need additional equipment.

* [note: use a topic relevant to RTC]

** [note: we will supply a login and password to the applicants in advance]

For the purposes of evaluating the teaching demonstration, I would look for the following:

1. Did the applicant introduce himself/herself?

2. Did the applicant provide an agenda or a verbal overview of what would be presented?

3. Did the applicant establish a good rapport with the students?

4. Was the lesson well-organized and follow a logical sequence?

5. Did the applicant use strategies to help students anchor the lesson? (i.e. handouts or tie to previous experience)

6. Did the applicant check for understanding?

7. Did the applicant use more than one strategy to address different learning styles?

8. Did the applicant appear to be knowledgeable about the topic (i.e. skillfully navigate the appropriate database(s) and create a search strategy)?

9. Did the applicant demonstrate how to evaluate the database or documents for the purpose intended? (i.e. research paper, essay, speech)

10. Did the applicant discuss ethical use of information?

11. Did the applicant use technology effectively?

12. Did the applicant summarize what was covered?

13. Did the applicant provide contact information to help students with follow-up questions?

I told the search committee that in 15 minutes, we should not expect to see all 13 criteria, but I would hope to see most of them.

Mindy

Subject: [LIBRARYDIR] teaching demos?

Good morning all,
As I am gearing up for interviews for my Faculty Librarian position, I would be very interested in what you have requested of librarian applicants in terms of a teaching demonstration during the interview process. I am throwing around several ideas, but if you don't mind sharing your prompts, questions, directions, etc. as to what you asked applicants to teach about, that would be extremely helpful.

Thanks in advance
