Our president refused to have the barcodes printed on the cards because of aesthetics.

We make the cards here in the library on our campus and I actually design them. Ours have both a magstrip and barcode. We use the barcode here in the library but there are magstrip readers all over campus as we track student use of services with them.

It shouldn't be hard to include a barcode in the design although I would imagine it wouldn't be hard to add a magstrip reader to use with Alma either.

I am grateful that they asked me. I had written several weeks ago asking if they would consider printing a barcode of the student ID directly on the student ID cards. I suspect they hadn't considered the impact of a new card printer on the library up to that point and I didn't realize they were studying a new card printing system. I'm glad we were not caught off guard.

You are welcome. We were very upset when the new ID cards came out and no longer had barcodes on them. Tech Services came to the rescue with the card readers and it is working well.

Thanks, Tammy. So far, you are the only one who indicated they are using a mag stripe. It is helpful to know what we need to do to make it work.

We use mag strips on our new student ID cards and have student ID numbers as our primary identifier in Alma. Attached to each of our circulation stations is a card reader that we swipe the cards through. We did have to have our Tech Services people do a bit of tinkering with the card reader to prevent extra characters from appearing at the beginning and end of the ID numbers. You would also want to make sure a carriage return code is included so you don't have to hit enter after swiping the card.

Subject: [LIBRARYDIR] Mag strips on student ID cards

Hi all,

Our registration office is considering switching to a student ID machine that encodes the student ID into a mag strip. Is anyone using a mag strip card with ALMA? Our practice over the last 15 years has been to attach a pre-printed barcode to the student ID. We'd like to get away from that.

Thanks!

Mindy
