[LIBRARYDIR] WSL message from Secretary Wyman

Young Ahniwan, you are as usual astutely perceptive peering behind the thin veil of words and crying, the emperor has no prose.

Let me enlighten you on the meaning of the title Federal Collection Executive Manager.

I was allowed to choose a title for my new position. Among the choices "Man of Nonsense" was rejected as too obvious. The root word for nonsense is no-cents and is irrelevant to this discussion.

Second was the title Man makes no Sense which I found uncomfortably close to the image of a person who cannot hold a job. From the Latin slackerus, the ancient root of the modern term slacker. Levi Slacker, as you know, was a person so pompous he refused to wear jeans with fashionable tears in the back pockets. Clearly no one wants to be associated with that scallywag.

I favored the title God among Mortals but Tim Furman had already claimed it.

So I was left with the title Executive Manager first made possible by the Theban philosopher Gluten Maximus cousin of Gluteus but not the butt of unkind remarks. The phrase Executive comes from the ancient Phoenician sailors who would chant the word as they rowed. Thus the ancient phase "he who knows everything" was born. It was the Bard himself, Bard Simpson to be exact, who blended that phrase with the vogue expression "does nothing" that one hears in the coffee houses of Europe.

Hence when I couple the phrases together it will instantly be obvious, Grasshopper, that the the meaning of Executive Manager is "He who knows all but does nothing." That is the appropriate approach to highly mental jobs such as these, much as in academics.

However should you need more information my young padawan consider these goals: 1) develop and implement a distributed regional depository collection where participants share in the responsibilities of the regional library. Read that as keeping federal publications indefinitely or until Jesus comes as commanded by the Goddess of Publications, Superintendent Mary Alice Baish.

2) Create a fervor throughout the land so that every federal publication god created is available to anyone, anywhere, anytime, i.e., AAA.

3) With props that convey the appearance of Fabio promote the virtues of federal publications and the Washington State Library in Rotaries and beauty parlors from the rolling hills of the Palouse to the gravel beaches of the Washington coast.

Now my work is done. Any questions? Psst. Invite me to LLC and I'll reveal more mysteries including how to bake a pineapple right side up cake.

The new position Rand will be stepping in to is Federal Collection Executive Manager. I don’t know what that means or entails.

Wishing Rand the best and hoping we get another excellent State Librarian to step up.

As a supporter of the State Library, I wanted to let you know that Rand Simmons has decided to step aside as the State Librarian to take a new position within the State Library.

I very much appreciate all Rand has done to lead the State Library through some very difficult circumstances the past few years. I am also very pleased Rand will remain with us in the Library and believe his skills and experience are a great fit for his new role and responsibility.

We will begin immediately with the search for a new State Librarian and are confident the opportunity to lead the transformation of the Washington State Library into the future will attract outstanding candidates. In the meantime, the leadership, organizational structure and operations of the library will remain unchanged, guided by the oversight of Deputy Secretary of State Greg Lane. Greg can be reached at greg.lane at sos.wa.gov<mailto:greg.lane at sos.wa.gov> or (360) 902-4141.

Thank you for your continued dedication to, and support of, the State Library. We are excited for the future of this important institution.

Sincerely,
Kim Wyman
