[LIBRARYDIR] values for library "surplus inventory"

Peninsula's Business Office asks for this information. Like Eric, we run a Voyager report for the items withdrawn each year. We use it to calculate the average year of publication (pulled from the MARC record) for each category of item (monographs, DVDs, etc.). Then we assign a value based on the average acquisition cost for that category during that year, and multiply by the number withdrawn.

We're also asked to estimate a value for items added to the collection as gifts. Same thing - estimated value equals the average cost per (averaged) publication date, multiplied by the number of gifts.

Lynn:

Our Business Office has never asked for this information.

We do a Voyager report to count the number of items withdrawn from the catalog each year for our internal statistics. If asked for a dollar value I would guess an average value and multiply that by the number withdrawn.

Subject: [LIBRARYDIR] values for library "surplus inventory"

Hello all:

Our accounting department has asked me to find out what methods are being used at other colleges to assign values to withdrawn library materials (books, DVD, etc.).

If you've been asked for this information, can you share what systems for tracking original cost or formulas you use to calculate the value? Send to me and I'll share a summary if there's interest.

Thanks.
Lynn
