Subject: [LIBRARYDIR] 6/28 Online Confirmation Event

Dear Directors,

At our recent Bellingham meeting we approved a confirmation process for Primo as the discovery layer of choice for LMDC libraries, and since then the library platform working group has been pursuing that directive. That process was to include a day-long event designed to gather input for the library platform working group, and a decision by that group on behalf of LMDC regarding confirmation of Primo. At the same time, an LMDC team in contract discussions with Ex Libris polled the directors, effectively gathering that input on behalf of the working group. The directors who wish to participate in an event lean toward an educational event, one designed to help them and their staff understand discovery layers, Primo, and the larger context of library technology for LMDC, while also giving them the opportunity to state their questions and concerns.

Thus, you are invited to participate in an online event on Friday, June 28 from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. The agenda will include:

- Background:

o The recent LMDC process

§ The Clark agreement to move to a common platform; RFP -vs- confirmation process; requirements

§ Current status

o Regional context

o Trends in library technology

- Components of contemporary library technology systems (discovery layers, library management systems, system-level implications)

- Overview of discovery layers

o How they work; relation to federated searching and link resolvers

o Examples of several products

- Demonstration and key features of Ex Libris' Primo

- Questions, comments and concerns from attendees

This event is open to all LMDC libraries. While it is primarily an educational event, library platform working group members will attend to gather input from attendees. Please feel free to contact me with questions about this event. I'll send a link and further details for attendees by Wednesday.
