Nice seeing you too. Filled out the survey. I suspect this will not be an issue for the vast majority of CTCs. It isn't for BBCC.

Subject: [LIBRARYDIR] IT Academy - Individuals Without Library Service

IT Academy and those without library service:

We have an issue with registering individuals for IT Academy courses who, in the case of the CTCs, are not students, faculty, staff or administration. For those of you who did not attend the LMDC meeting yesterday, July 31, we discussed this. We also discussed some issues which may affect the ability of individuals from the community from using library computers to complete the courses. For now, let’s concentrate on registration and say that local policy will prevail beyond registration.

Bottom line - the IT Academy is underwritten by General Fund- State dollars and anyone living with Washington State is entitled to enroll in the courses without paying a fee, that is without paying a fee for a borrower's card. To charge anyone a fee to register for a course will surely kill the chances of continued funding for the program.

So here is my proposal and it requires generosity on your part. Any resident of Washington will be registered by any library participating in the IT Academy subject to the willingness of the library. If the individual wants to participate in other services the library offers, the library may offer a borrower's card under the library's usual policy and procedure. It must be clear to the individual, however, that registration for IT Academy courses is free and is not tied to borrowing privileges.

If the library is not comfortable with this policy, individuals who are not students, faculty, staff or administrators will be referred to the Washington State Library and we will register them for courses.

We haven't worked out the mechanics of registration but we are in the process of doing so.

I'd like to know how you feel about this. Is it workable? Will you register these unserved individuals or will you refer?

Please take a short survey. Here is the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6DSY6TM. There is room for comments in case we didn’t ask the correct questions. Survey ends August 9, 2013.
It was great to have LMDC at WSL! Thanks so much.
