Dear Colleagues,
We are excited to announce The Washington Consortium for Undergraduate Research and Equity (WA CURE). WA CURE is a statewide consortium that will strengthen the ability of community and technical colleges to engage their students in undergraduate research in the classroom. This project is led by the WA State Board of Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC), Green River College (GRC), Yakima Valley College (YVC), and Edmonds College (EC) in service of our 34 colleges.
When students connect to their discipline through research, they feel more engaged and motivated and learn more. This connection has a positive impact on their retention and graduation rates, and in particular, the rate of graduation for first- and second-year students*. The vision for WA CURE is that every student gets this game-changing opportunity, all faculty are supported in teaching this way, and colleges see educational outcomes improve by implementing undergraduate research as an institution-level student success strategy.
Washington CTCs are national leaders in undergraduate research at community colleges. This project builds on decades of work by innovative faculty in our system and WA CURE1, a two-year system-wide collaborative planning process. Over the next four years, WA CURE will provide professional development opportunities to support faculty and colleges in integrating undergraduate research into courses.
In addition to program and faculty development, WA CURE is also a research project. We will study implementation of course-based undergraduate research experiences throughout the life of the grant, specifically the outcomes for faculty, institutions, and students across our system. If you are already teaching classes with undergraduate research experiences, be sure to request your course scheduler code your class <https://sites.google.com/view/wacure/teaching-cures> with the attribute "SURE" so you can contribute to this research project.
