Education assures students FAFSA processing unaffected by shutdown

The Education Department is telling borrowers that the government shutdown is not affecting the processing of applications for federal student aid.

"FYI: The Department of Education is not affected by the shutdown. You can still complete your FAFSA form and there is no impact on your school disbursing your funds. Remember to check your deadlines!" the Federal Student Aid office wrote on Twitter today.

The tweet came after some Twitter users posted that the shutdown was holding up processing of completed applications, along with the hashtag "ShutdownStories."

Nine federal agencies are affected by shutdown, which has no end in sight, but the Education Department is not one of them and is funded for fiscal 2019.

Education Department spokesperson Liz Hill told POLITICO there's "bad information floating around on Twitter."
