[Factc] [EXTERNAL] Re: Fw: Adjunct to Tenure-Track Conversion Positions Update

As BEdA Faculty in corrections, I was disappointed (to put it lightly) that our most vulnerable, marginalized students with the lowest retention rates: BASIC SKILLS STUDENTS -- and corrections basic skills students -- seem to have been ignored in the decision. Aaron and I discussed this in a breakout room in the fall.

I am not talking about GED students. I am talking about Transitional Studies students enrolled in bridge classes (Clark calls them CAP classes) that award them high school credits while also intentionally boosting them to the college level, making the transition from <100 level to >100 seamless.

At Larch, there are no tenured faculty. I am the only full-time, temp faculty. I will ask our TS department for more details about the adjunct/tenure status to provide clarification if FACTC would find it useful.

It seems like the departments listed below didn’t make the cut last time, but now that the college was allocated new positions, they are due (consolation prize).

In my opinion this is not how the positions should be granted, especially without faculty voice. Furthermore, this is the fear I have and what I expressed at our meeting last week. This doesn’t follow the Bill’s intent. For starters, if you look at those departments, do their students represent who the Bill explicitly calls out? It may be true in some, but I doubt it’s true in all.

Follow up from Clark College: how our new tenure positions were distributed by department and WHO decided (note no faculty were part of the decision, as I mentioned in the meeting).

This email came from our VPI.

Subject: Adjunct to Tenure-Track Conversion Positions Update

Hello dear Instruction colleagues:

We wanted to share some important and exciting news from Instruction.

As you may know, Clark College has received funding from the state to convert nine currently existing adjunct positions to full-time tenure-track positions. To determine which of the current positions would qualify for this conversion based on the requirements and restrictions of the legislation, and to identify the nine to recommend to Dr. Edwards and the Executive Cabinet, the Deans, AVP, and VPI met last December and this January to review all of the academic staffing requests and forms from each academic division.

Below is the list of nine positions selected:

Department

Positions for Conversion

Accounting

1

Allied Health

1

Anthropology

1

Cybersecurity BAS

1

Communication Studies

1

Earth and Environmental Science

1

English

2

Surveying and Geomatics

1

We are excited to be adding these faculty positions to our Clark College team. Human Resources will be working with the Deans and hiring managers very soon to begin the recruitment process and form hiring committees.

Using the 22 tenure line requests submitted to the Deans last fall, the next step was for the VPI, AVP, and Deans to finalize a staffing plan for the remaining 13 tenure line requests. This group met this morning to finalize this plan, creating a list of those positions which are urgent, those that are strongly recommended, and those that are recommended. This information will be shared with Dr. Edwards for consideration for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years.

We will provide an update on this information in the coming weeks.

Sincerely,

Paul Wickline

Vice President of Instruction
