Subject: NSF-IUSE Project to develop statewide CTC Undergraduate Research Consortium, hiring faculty for leadership positions; Project Kick-Off on 12/1/21.

I am writing to invite your participation in our exciting new project. We got the funding and now we are ready to get started!

Institutionalizing Undergraduate Research (UGR) to Advance Systemic Change and Equity at Washington Community Collegeswill bring together WA State Community Colleges faculty and administrators to plan a statewide undergraduate research consortium.

This project is supported by 23 colleges in the system and the State Board of Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC). The goal is to design and implement a system-wide undergraduate research program which the SBCTC will then institutionalize. It is funded by the National Science Foundation’s IUSE (Improving Undergraduate STEM Education) and is open to STEM and Social Science faculty in keeping with NSF’s remit.

In Phase One we will:

  1. Develop a distributed leadership structure.
  2. Investigate systemic barriers, challenges, and opportunities for expanding UGR experiences and educational equity at institutional and state-wide levels.
  3. Develop a shared vision and strategic plan.
  4. Form a statewide pedagogical community of practice for course-based UGR experiences.
  5. Build institutional and statewide executive leadership support.
  6. Author a Phase 2 IUSE grant to support implementation.

Our first step is to put together our team.

We arehiring for several stipended faculty leadership positions. All STEM and Social Science faculty, including adjuncts, are welcome to apply (see the position summaries appended below). Further details about the project, these positions, and application forms are available on ourwebsite<https://www.bellevuecollege.edu/rise/welcome-to-the-undergraduate-research-consortium-for-washington-ctcs/>.

We will be holding a Project Launch Meeting on December 1, 2022, at 08:00 PST if you like to learn more and meet the team -Zoom Meeting<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fj%2F88930798122%3Fpwd%3DaFRvK2xldEVVZDg1Z254VzFjbDQvZz09&data=04%7C01%7Cirene.shaver%40bellevuecollege.edu%7Cd415da8aa06c495ae2b008d99333a3f8%7Cf94c251c1347422eb3ea8ac56befd6cb%7C0%7C0%7C637702672332457917%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=nSnClWbJArNC59r4IBlBVP%2FugljsBa8Bw8CMwYm7PLg%3D&reserved=0>(Meeting ID: 889 3079 8122 / Passcode: 368781) - and if you would like to be part of our email list to receive updates about this project, please sign up here<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fforms%2Fd%2Fe%2F1FAIpQLSf2OqNZPRrvb1ynr6jJx1Dm_x9dsGD9vM8j_tdQ9-LLB44h8A%2Fviewform%3Fusp%3Dsf_link&data=04%7C01%7Cirene.shaver%40bellevuecollege.edu%7Cd415da8aa06c495ae2b008d99333a3f8%7Cf94c251c1347422eb3ea8ac56befd6cb%7C0%7C0%7C637702672332467907%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=qlWmqxFJgIOk2qn%2BuAbqezrDcUoNXSjNNCa%2Blpid%2Ff8%3D&reserved=0>.

OPEN POSITIONS

Regional Coordinators (4)

We seek four candidates who will serve a 2-year term and act as regional coordinators representing 5-7 colleges within Washington State’s geographic area (North/South/East/West) and serve as facilitators and coordinators of this strategic planning process. They will work directly with the steering committee and Program Coordinator, Irene Shaver.

Status: Currently hiring. Applications are due 10/29/21.

Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) Instructional Community of Practice Facilitators (3)

The SBCTC will host a new online community of practice dedicated to curating, sharing, and developing course-based undergraduate research experiences curriculum. We are seeking three Community of Practice Facilitators to support faculty across the state in learning about CUREs, gaining access to existing resources and curriculum, and developing their own CUREs.

Status: Hiring for Winter Quarter 2022. Applications are due 1/7/2022.

Institutional Action Team Leaders (1/College)

We seek one Institutional Leader per community and technical college (CTC) who will connect with faculty on their campus to engage in a dialogue about UGR needs, support data collection, and act as a project ambassador. Action Team Leaders will work closely with the regional coordinators.

Status: Hiring for Winter Quarter 2022. Applications are due 1/7/2022.

Workgroups

Much of the work of thinking through barriers and how we might overcome them or identifying successful models we want to scale will be done in quarter-long workgroup sessions. Workgroup topics will cover a range of topics focused on what we want to create. These workgroups are an opportunity for you to work with colleagues and administrators from other colleges on a topic of shared interest and contribute your learning to the collective. Workgroup findings will form the basis for our strategic plan moving forward and will outline the services and roles the consortium will play in the future in supporting faculty and students across the state.

Status: Self-nominate as a workgroup lead or workgroup participant and suggest a topic you would like to work on for the session starting in Winter Quarter 2022. Round one nominations are due 1/7/2022.
