It is my honor to share with you that registration for the Faculty and Staff of Color Conference, FSOCC, is open!
Every year (for 23 years!), this annual conference provides a vital space for systemically non-dominant employees (see explanation of the term<bit.ly/2BWHWRX>, coined first by Dr. Debra Jenkins) to connect and join in community.
Please see below for more information.
If you hold a leadership or managerial position in your institution, and you have recently hired a systemically non-dominant employee who may not be aware of this unique professional development opportunity, please consider sharing information about the FSOCC with that person(s) and offering financial support for him/her/them to attend.

23rd Annual Washington State Faculty and Staff of Color Conference

Registration is now open for the 23rd annual FSOCC, October 31 – November 2, 2018, Semiahmoo Resort, Blaine WA, Theme: Building Bridges & Making Connections: Together we Make It Great.

Attendance:
The Faculty & Staff of Color Conference (FSOCC) provides a safe and inclusive space for systemically non-dominant employees in higher education throughout Washington State. All workshops are designed for faculty and staff of color; however, any faculty or staff who would like to support the mission of the conference at their institution are welcome to attend. As a complement to and in preparation for the conference, the FSOCC also offers a white affinity group pre-conference breakout session, which provides dialogue for more constructive cross-racial interactions and explores ways in which even minimal racial stress may trigger a defensive mindset and create a barrier to open discussion.

“Diversity is being invited to the party, inclusion is being asked to dance.” - Vernā Myers

FSOCC Mission:
• To create, model, and lead networks for ongoing dialogue on issues impacting professional and career opportunities for faculty, administrators and staff of color in all sectors of higher education.
• To develop greater awareness and visibility of policies and plans that enhance the institutional climate, access, and educational quality for faculty, administrators and staff of color in higher education in Washington.
• To increase our capacity and subject matter expertise to combat racism, promote ethnic and racial diversity, and achieve professional excellence in higher education.

This year, there will be affinity group breakout sessions 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., with the following groups; be sure to indicate on the registration page, if you are planning on attending:

• African American /Black

• Asian

• Latina/Latino

• Middle-Eastern

• Multi-Ethnic

• Pacific Islander

• White

The conference will kick off with a keynote by Luis Ortega. Luis Ortega is a TEDx Speaker, social impact consultant, and the director and founder of Storytellers for Change. Over the last eleven years, Luis has traveled across the nation to share his personal narrative and message about the power of story-telling and story-listening to generate empathy, promote inclusion, and inspire action. Just following the keynote, there will be a reception and networking.

On day two, there will be a panel discussion with Board of Trustees from various colleges, moderated by Dan Johnson, South Seattle College. The panelists include: Lisa Chin, Bellevue College, Debrena Jackson Gandy, Highline College, Emily Washines, Central Washington University, & Sharonne Navas, Green River College. There will be an Awards Banquet and live auction that will include a comedian, that you won’t want to miss. Also on day two, there will be concurring workshops, vendors, silent auction, and a dance. The conference will conclude with a keynote by Nikkita Oliver. Nikkta Oliver is a Seattle-based writer, teaching artist, attorney, mayoral candidate, and community organizer. Her writing has been published in the South Seattle Emerald, Crosscut, the E...stablishment, Last Real Indians, The Seattle Weekly, and the Stranger. Oliver holds a J.D. and Masters of Education from the University of Washington. She is also the case manager for Creative Justice, an arts-based alternative to incarceration, and has worked for arts organizations such as Writers in the Schools and Arts Corp.
