[DEOC] Legislative update: SB 5616 and companion HB 1541

Good morning!

Sharing some bills that came on our radar this week: SB 5616<https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary/?BillNumber=5616&Chamber=Senate&Year=2023> and companion HB 1541<https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary/?BillNumber=1541&Year=2023&Initiative=false>, also called, "Establishing the nothing without us act."

HB 1541 was read for the first time 01/24/23 and referred to the Committee on State Government & Tribal Relations. It is scheduled for public hearing on February 3 and you can submit comments to either bill from the links.

The bills call for the legislature to include persons with lived experience in policy decision making around issues that directly impact them and to ensure meaningful participation from people with direct lived experience on each statutorily created or statutorily mandated multimember task force, work group, advisory committee, board, commission, council, or other similar entity tasked with examining policies or issues that directly and tangibly affect historically underrepresented communities.
