[DEOC] Increase DEI funding- Legislative talks

Good evening, DEOC!

Really good questions, Yadira.

A couple of things come to mind after chatting with Melissa this evening:

1: Making sure you have seen the 2023 Operating Budget Request<https://www.sbctc.edu/resources/documents/colleges-staff/programs-services/legislative-outreach/2023/2023-25-op-budget-request-one-pager.pdf> one pager published on September 9, 2022, and Governor Inslee's Proposed 2023-25 Budget and Policy Highlights<https://ofm.wa.gov/sites/default/files/public/budget/statebudget/highlights/budget23/202325PolicyBudgetHighlights.pdf> released December 2022. The SBCTC 2023 Operating Budget Request is what Arlen Harris, our Legislative Director is sharing out this legislative session. We encourage you to bookmark this Legislative Outreach page<https://www.sbctc.edu/colleges-staff/programs-services/legislative-outreach/> on the SBCTC website.

2: From my knowledge, Ha is correct in that the EDI strategic plans that were submitted in 2022 were referenced/gleaned to draft the 2023 budget request. I began my role on November 1 and observe that the timing of when those plans were requested, the administering of campus climate surveys, and other strategic planning happening at your colleges was not coordinated or ideal by any stretch. The EDI strategic plans are but one data source that may or may not be reflective of your current priorities or needs.

3: I wonder how folks feel about a brief survey like this<https://forms.gle/rxx9oag4z5yiMaUB9>? I drafted it as an example and it's live if you'd like to use it (or edit--I can add collaborators) or others can create something else if it's not helpful. I included a link to the survey results in the description of the survey so any DEOC member can access the results.

AND/OR

4: Would folks find it helpful to gather on zoom to do some sharing/organizing around priorities so that the presidents and chancellors are hearing similar messages across the system?

Thoughts? Let us know how we can support any of your convening, and please know a shared commitment in the SBCTC EDI office (Melissa and I) is transparency and passing on whatever information we receive so you know what we know.

Peace,
Sophia

Hi, Yadira - great questions, thx for posing to the group. I believe there was a review of everyone’s EDI strategic plan submissions and SBCTC used it as a guide/reference for including addt’l EDI funding in their legislative priorities for this session. It likely surfaced up common themes across our colleges for areas of priority, need for funds. @Melissa Williams<mailto:mwilliams at sbctc.edu> and @sagtarap at sbctc.edu<mailto:sagtarap at sbctc.edu>, is this is the case? It could give us a starting point. Also, I may be remembering incorrectly, please forgive, if so. Best - Ha

Hello All.

I am wondering if within our roles and with our college presidents, are there topics that we are focusing on when it comes to increasing DEI funding to our colleges.

My college president is going to legislative sessions and asked me what are the top priorities, I wonder what are the topics and if there should be some consistency with other colleges when college presidents are talking to legislators.

Thanks!

Yadira
