Thank you Melissa. We will definitely meet with Dr. Smith as a Commission.

Could you please send me a few dates and time that he has available so that he and I can have a 1:1 as well.

Thank you A million Times Over!

Hello, friends,

Thank you, Charlie, for initiating this conversation and for sharing your observation about Dr. Smith's definition of equity. I'd noted in during the Zoom meeting as something to raise with him.

It would be wise overall and helpful for Rod if he and the DEOC could meet. It would be an opportunity for DEOs to learn about his leadership strategy and approaches plus an opportunity for him to hear from you all and your wealth of experiences in the CTC system.

Would it be useful if I set up a Zoom meeting for this purpose?

I agree, Rod will encounter many challenges and that we can be a sounding board and support for him and the work to which we're collectively dedicated. I was encouraged today to hear Rod explain how he has researched and applied non-Eurocentric approaches to leadership-that seems important to him-though maybe he could use feedback from us on whether those approaches shine through strongly enough in his strategic plan. If not, he may want to make revisions.

Please let me know if you all are interested in a meeting and I'll set it up.

In solidarity,
Melissa

Thx to Charlie and Robert for sharing concerns, would love to consider how we might, as a collective, be a sounding board and offer support to Dr. Smith? It is one of the beautiful aspects of this group that I've leaned into many times. Maybe invite him into a DEOC meeting in the near future? Thoughts and thx to all for considering. Best - Ha

Hey Fam,

I'm on the advisory board for the new sbctc director along with Dr. Valencia for the director of Pro Dev, Dr. Rodrick Smith. Here's the plan he shared with the advisory committee. I'm hoping Dr. Smith will be able to be a great leader for racial equity, but its clear to me there will be many pressures and obstacles in his way.

I've expressed my concerns ensuring we don't slap a new name on this and continuing to ignore the overwhelmingly homogeneous representation of all leadership positions in our system. There's a lot of pressure to get back up and running as normal, and in my opinion, this isn't a rebrand, it must be a refocus and redesign.

Historically excluded peoples are overwhelmingly under-represented in our system, so it would be a direct conflict of racial equity if the program doesn't refocus specifically to address this. I've shared this to the board and to Dr. Smith himself. For those who read the slides. I also sent a note to Melissa( New Director for EDI) about the definition of equity that reads like equality and in direct conflict with the stateboard's racial equity definition/statement.

Keeping us informed.

Best,
