Thx for sharing, Consuelo! Will modify and use here at GRC 😊

Did anyone send out a campus message for Hispanic Heritage Month? I’m working on one, would love to see what others shared. SBCTC put up a nice recognition on their EDI webpage: Hispanic Heritage Month<https://www.sbctc.edu/about/edi/monthly-recognitions.aspx> (thx to Christina and Melissa!).

Best,
Ha

BC Chaverim (our Jewish affinity group) put together the below message in collaboration with my office and we distributed to all BC employees today. I've received a lot of positive feedback about seeing this message and people adjusting programming accordingly, so I wanted to pass this on to you in case a modified version would be helpful to your community.

In light,
Consuelo

Subject: Happy First Day of the Quarter & Jewish High Holiday Reminders

Happy first day of the Academic Year BC Community!!

Next week the Jewish High Holidays begin with Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) starting at sundown on Sunday, September 25, 2022 and extending through sundown on September 27th. The holiest day of the year on the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) begins at sundown on Tuesday October 4th and ends at sundown Wednesday, October 5th.The High Holidays hold as much significance for observers as other important holidays, such as Christmas Day or Eid El-Fitr, hold for their observers.

Faculty can support students by not having major assignments due on these days or by allowing for extensions. Although the college does provide the opportunity for students to request formal accommodations for their classes (https://www.bellevuecollege.edu/policies/id-2950p-2/<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bellevuecollege.edu%2Fpolicies%2Fid-2950p-2%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cha.nguyen%40greenriver.edu%7C3747121b216e4941ad0f08da9a9bf710%7Cfa40663e972749789bce776cf824bca5%7C0%7C0%7C637992291925774310%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=JfAFFxQswSFCF%2FWuqTwMlrtoq71j6Lqc0gbi1OQsKYE%3D&reserved=0>), many are not aware of this option and also will not be able to submit an accommodation with the required 2-week notice.

We also encourage BC Faculty, Staff, and Administrators to avoid scheduling important meetings or trainings on these days whenever possible. In the interest of student/staff privacy, if you find that you have already scheduled a major event on these days, please consider moving the events to a different day if possible.

As such, ODEI announced during the BC Welcome event that the Open House for the Social Justice Center would take place on Oct. 5th - we realized we scheduled this during Yom Kippur and will now hold the open house on October 6th (more info to come).

Thank you for not scheduling significant school events on major religious holidays! This is important because “this conveys to all students that they are a meaningful part of their school communities and that their religious traditions matter,” as the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction has written.<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.k12.wa.us%2Fpolicy-funding%2Fequity-and-civil-rights%2Finformation-families-civil-rights-washington-schools%2Freligion-schools%2Fcommon-religious-and-us-public-holiday-calendars&data=05%7C01%7Cha.nguyen%40greenriver.edu%7C3747121b216e4941ad0f08da9a9bf710%7Cfa40663e972749789bce776cf824bca5%7C0%7C0%7C637992291925774310%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=jtQ6V8Rh7KzyBD%2BfFDJ7GGc9S0pNSU2XqTAzH2SmESE%3D&reserved=0>

In addition, you may hear your Jewish colleagues and students may mention that they are celebrating Sukkot (The Festival of Booths) on Oct. 9th-16th though this holiday is most often experienced in the evenings and less likely to need a daytime accommodation.

Please note that Jewish students and colleagues have diverse beliefs and practices with some, for example, only celebrating one day of Rosh Hashanah and others celebrating two days.

Appropriate greetings for the Jewish High Holidays are “Happy New Year” and “Shana Tova.”

Thank you for supporting our Jewish community!
