Hello Robert!  I hope you are doing well and loving your position at Lake Washington.  I retired from Pierce a year ago and now do some contract work for the SBCTC related to Guided Pathways coaching. As you might know, each college in the system is assigned 2 coaches to partner with them in their guided pathways work and serve as reflectors to help the college achieve their equity goals through guided pathways.  I co-lead (with Jon Kerr) the coaching team, designing professional development for coaches and also assisting colleges with getting the optimal experience from coaching. Jon and I also lead the process of hiring and training new coaches. We (very fortunately!) report to Monica Wilson at SBCTC.

I have 2 reasons for contacting you today.

First, we are interested in having you, or another member of DEOC, join the Guided Pathways Coaching Advisory Committee.  Our role is more specific than the overall GP Advisory Committee that Monica chairs as it just focuses on coaching. We meet quarterly to examine what colleges are saying and needing from the coaching experience, so that Jon and I can then program professional development that best aligns with that need.

Since you are on the Guided Pathways Advisory Committee, we thought that would be a nice combination, but if you feel that is too much, please feel free to pass on our request to another member of DEOC.  We are having our next meeting in November, and have started a Doodle poll to determine optimal dates.  I am including that here for either your use or the other DEOC member.

My second request is a bit more lengthy:  We are hoping DEOC will partner with us in the revision of the guided pathways Self-Assessments.

Several years ago, the Guided Pathways leadership led an inclusive effort to develop Self-Assessments for 4 of the guided pathways practices. These assessments provided detail and description of what these practices might look like when fully developed and helped the colleges move beyond the definition initially outlined in the initial Guided Pathways Essential Elements documentation.
The first 4 included:  Advising, Engagement, Program Mapping, and Math.I am attaching one to give you context.
These have been helpful to the colleges, but were developed at a time when equity was not centered in our work, and we would like to revise them so that they are completely reflective of our mission - to provide the necessary framework for a higher education model that advances racial, social, and economic justice.
The Process
Our first step will be to ask the current 32 coaches for input. This will occur in late October.
Then, we would like to ask a few members of DEOC to join with a few others from other councils and commissions who have been active with guided pathways to analyze the coach comments, add their own, and draft the final versions.   I should say this is our proposed plan of action, as we would like to collaborate with those DEOC members to design a final process.
The work will most likely be December 2022 through February of 2023, but we hope to organize our teams and determine a final process during the month of November.  We do not imagine this work will be intense and will limit the number of meetings to respect everyone's work load.
