Subject: A message to the community from the Seattle Colleges Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Community

A message to the community from the Seattle Colleges Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Community:

As an Office, we will strive daily to bring mindfulness practices of peace, healing, and listening spaces to our community. In many instances, the community must speak for the voices of the unheard and overlooked. The fatigue to address everything is REAL and many times triggering and traumatizing for members of our community who are impacted the most.

More often than not, events that impact our most vulnerable communities come to remind us of how much work still must be done for true healing in our communities. In the midst of our own need to heal as the Seattle Colleges Community, we are also faced with global unrest from events around the nation, and in our local communities. We are deeply pained by the horrific murders of people who are targeted for simply existing.

You may be experiencing a variety of emotions: angry, confused, devastated, numb, in shock, grief or otherwise. Be assured that these are appropriate responses to tragedy. While we have been here before, we haven't been in a time without the ability to hold one another, to engage in community healing, to gather to mourn support, and take action together.

Take care of yourself. Set boundaries for social media and news consumption. Staying informed can be important but avoid overexposure.

As an Office, we will continue to provide resources and spaces to help our community to process these feelings and emotions while facilitating a journey of healing for ALL. The Office of EDI will be hosting a Healing and Mindfulness Listening Space where we can all come together to acknowledge events: To acknowledge the pain and grief our students and employees might be experiencing collectively and individually; to acknowledge the importance of just listening mindfully; to (re)Imagine building a collective community of trust and understanding; to (re)Imagine how we can collectively create a sense of belonging at all of our campuses and locations; to (re)Imagine the ways we can collectively honor and respect all the ways we show up as human, in our social identities, our health, our wellness, and our mental abilities.

While Zoom is not the ideal space, it is what we have and we will use it to gather together. Please join us on this journey: Tuesday, May 24th 11:30am-1:00pm. (District-wide student body community). Wednesday, May 25th Noon- 1:00pm (District-wide employees’ community).

We hear you, African, African American, Native American, First Nations, Alaska Native, Latinx/e, Indigenous, Native Hawaiian (Kanaka Maoli), Pacific Islander, Asian, Southeast Asian, Asian American, Indigenous Asian, West Asian, Veterans, Jewish, Muslim, LGBTQIA+, Trans, non-binary, neurodivergent, sustainability community employee/student members.
We hear you, but more importantly we deeply care for you and we need you!

This includes communities from all cultures, ages, religious beliefs, races/ethnicities, sizes, gender identities, abilities, qualities, sexual orientations/identities, socioeconomic classes, veteran status, political beliefs, and citizenship status and sovereign nations. Here in Our Seattle Colleges community, we welcome all and we need you ALL on this journey together!

We highly encourage our community to set boundaries for social media and news consumption. Community, please stay informed (which can be important) but avoid overexposure. In the meantime, here are some resources and attached to help us through these times:
