We hired a student outreach specialist<https://www.schooljobs.com/careers/spscc/jobs/3350686/outreach-admissions-specialist-ignite-black-scholars-two-vacancies> embedded in the high schools and in partnership with community organizations  to help with outreach to historically excluded students.
These outreach efforts will connect these students directly to our Ignite<https://spscc.edu/student-life/ignite> and Black Scholars<https://spscc.edu/student-life/black-scholars> Equity programs.

Hi Margarita,

I use the funds towards the salary for our Diversity Coordinator who does direct DEI event programming and advising for diverse clubs (like MEChA and Baile Folklorico). She is also now our MSSDC representative as well.  I had to track it down a few years ago though…it was being used previously for adjunct faculty pay.

Thank you for the ongoing conversation on this.

I appreciate hearing what Hannah & Consuelo are doing with the 5194 Outreach funding -- what we are doing at WWCC is using those funds to support a hire of an Outreach Coordinator and building the partnership between my office and that department.

However, my funding question was, as Ha has interpreted, related to the earmarked funds to support Students of Color. This is what our Business Office has shared with me about the allocation specifics:

For the last 3+ years, those funds have been used for the salary of our Director of Student Life who has a strong drive and does a lot of work to support our students of color. As we work on our budget for next year, there's consideration to direct those funds towards my salary.

I don't think this is completely unusual, but I would prefer to see those funds used more directly for programs and activities aimed at improving resources available to students of color and I'm curious how the funds are used in other institutions.

I have access to this funding here at BTC and I utilized it to hire an  individual who will be created culturally relevant outreach training and education for staff who go out into our community, as well as,  helping plan and initiating outreach to students of color and other historically underrepresented students both on and off campus.

I tried to add individual emails because this delay in the DEOC list is hindering action. (an issue for another day).

I'm guessing Margarita is referring to the $70,000 allocation in 5194 that earmarked for "Culturally Appropriate Student Outreach Program". The little information I had on it is located in the attachment that starts with E2SSB... I do have control over this budget for my institution, but I have partnered with Student Affairs. We have a team that has come together and launching a 2-day outreach summit geared towards incoming first-year students of color and the other backgrounds indicated in the bill. We are also considering utilizing an outside vendor for a mentorship matching program. That likely won't materialize until next year given bandwidth and capacity constraints.

For folks wondering what this allocation is, you might also refer to the 2nd attachment (5194 and 5227 Distributions...) That is the sheet I shared with the group back in February and lists the majority of our institutions getting $70,000 annually for outreach.

I'm happy to answer any questions I have information on. It's super frustrating that the information about this funding still isn't clearly communicated with our commission or institutions.
