[DEOC] [EXTERNAL] Re: Students of Color earmarked allocations

Good morning, DEOC colleagues:
Hope it's OK I'm looping into this item, want to help best I can!
I think Margarita is referring to earmarked funds to support Students of Color that are rolled into each college's biennial allocation from the State Board, not the allocations from SB 5194. I believe there was WACTC discussion in 2015 to remove this earmark (and the Disability earmark), but it was voted to keep them.
I would continue to encourage each of you to reach into your business officers for specific fiscal information on your campuses, they are best situated to respond on these items as it pertains to your college. The State Board allocates funding to each of the colleges, but the colleges determine how/where the funding is used.
Also, since many of you were not able to attend the last DEOC on March 17 meeting due to NWREC, it was voted for Choi to be rescheduled to meet with this group on April 21 to give an overview on the allocations for 5227 and 5194
I hope this is helpful in any way, let me know if there is anything else I can do to support you.
Best,
Ha

All,
I tried to add individual emails because this delay in the DEOC list is hindering action. (an issue for another day).

I'm guessing Margarita is referring to the $70,000 allocation in 5194 that earmarked for "Culturally Appropriate Student Outreach Program". The little information I had on it is located in the attachment that starts with E2SSB... I do have control over this budget for my institution, but I have partnered with Student Affairs. We have a team that has come together and launching a 2-day outreach summit geared towards incoming first-year students of color and the other backgrounds indicated in the bill. We are also considering utilizing an outside vendor for a mentorship matching program. That likely won't materialize until next year given bandwidth and capacity constraints.

For folks wondering what this allocation is, you might also refer to the 2nd attachment (5194 and 5227 Distributions...) That is the sheet I shared with the group back in February and lists the majority of our institutions getting $70,000 annually for outreach.

I'm happy to answer any questions I have information on. It's super frustrating that the information about this funding still isn't clearly communicated with our commission or institutions.

In support,
Consuelo

Hi, Margarita.

As always, I appreciate this group, I often am finding out information that I didn't know existed. Hence, I don't have any information about this funding. Could someone elaborate, please and thank you.

Best,

Phyllis

Hello beloved DEOs,

As we're working on getting next year's budget done, I'm curious if you know how your institution is using the Students of Color earmarked money. Do you have control/insight in how it's being used? Is it being used for salaries (yours?)? Student programming?

Any insight you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Margarita
