By creating degree programs that use only OERs, ATD’s OER Degree Initiative<http://www.achievingthedream.org/resources/initiatives/open-educational-resources-oer-degree-initiative> is helping 38 community colleges in 13 states

  1. Eliminate the financial burden textbooks place on many students
  2. Promote improvements in curriculum and pedagogy

Faculty played a key role in implementation, and, after the first evaluation, AtD is ready to share some early findings, including:

  * Faculty involved in the initiative are changing their teaching . . . and students are at least as or more engaged in OER courses than students in non-OER classrooms.
  * Faculty members with experience in using OER who received assistance from technology specialists and librarians in developing their courses were most likely to report changes in their teaching.
  * 70% of faculty identified cost as one of the top three factors (along with quality of materials and comprehensive content and activities) for selecting course material. In a previous OER implementation study, only 2.7 percent of faculty members identified cost as one the top three factors.
