Healing with Love & Community: Moving from Surviving to Thriving

Attendance
The Faculty & Staff of Color Conference provides a safe and inclusive space for systemically non-dominant employees in higher education throughout Washington State. All but the White Fragility pre-conference workshop in the agenda is designed for faculty and staff of color; however, any faculty or staff who would like to support the mission of the conference at their institution is welcome to attend. Attendees of the White Fragility pre-conference workshop will receive a better understanding of how our society leads to white fragility and provide dialogue for more constructive cross-racial interactions.  We strongly encourage white attendees of the FSOCC to attend this session prior to participating in the conference.

FSOCC Mission

*         To create, model and lead networks for ongoing dialogue on issues impacting professional and career opportunities for faculty, administrators and staff of color in all sectors of higher education.

*         To develop greater awareness and visibility of policies and plans that enhance the institutional climate, access, and educational quality for faculty, administrators and staff of color in higher education in Washington.

*         To increase our capacity and subject matter expertise to combat racism, promote ethnic and racial diversity, and achieve professional excellence in higher education.

Pre Conference Sessions
This year, there will be two pre-conference sessions, November 1, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

2.      White Fragility workshop

Networking Event
There will also be a networking event open to all conference participants 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.  This event will be similar to last year's pre-conference, giving you an opportunity to join your colleagues and meet new friends. This informal gathering will include prizes and light hors d'oeuvres.  Take this opportunity to mingle and converse with colleagues. Conference committee members will also provide a short activity to help get the conversation started.

Keynotes
The conference will kick off with a keynote by Olmeca. Olmeca is a community activist and university lecturer at University of Nevada, Las Vegas and guest lecturer throughout the U.S. including Notre Dame, University of Indiana, UIPUI, Puget Sound University to name a few.  Olmeca is also a veteran of the L.A. hip-hop & Chicanx music scene, Olmeca helped spawn a new trend of bilingual music that celebrates the Latin American diaspora in the United States. Olmeca will be performing during the cultural performances that will take place 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., on November 1.

On day two, there will be a panel discussion moderated by Debra Jenkins, Clark College.  The panelists include: Sachi Horback & Angel Reyna - Mentoring, Dolly England & Rashida Willard - Employee Resource Groups, Vik Bahl - Faculty & Staff Hiring, Aaron Reader and Felisciana Peralta - Bias Based Incidents, and Jan Yoshiwara, SBCTC Overview.. There will be a talent show showcasing amazing talent by conference attendees, concurring workshops, vendors, silent auction, and a dance.  The conference will conclude with a keynote by Rosa Clemente. Rosa Clemente is a Community organizer, radio journalist and hip-hop activist.  Rosa Clemente has been a community organizer and a featured keynote speaker, panelist and political commentator for over 20 years.

Scholarships
This year, the planning committee is pleased to offer a scholarship opportunity<https://goo.gl/forms/KPKRso8n7GXONnOH3> for two (2) prospective attendees of color.  These scholarships are aimed at removing some of the financial barriers to those who wish to attend, and to extend opportunities for engagement within the community.

Eligibility:  Scholarships are need-based and available to faculty and staff of color from WA area colleges or universities who wish to attend the 22nd annual FSOCC conference November 1 - 3, 2017. Please note: Along with credit cards, we are offering registration by Purchase Orders; however, all Purchase Orders have to be paid by Friday, October 27, 2017, unless other arrangements have been made.  Purchase Order registrations not paid up by Friday, October 27, 2017, will be canceled.
