Good afternoon, everyone,
Yesterday at the OSN meeting we got some information from CSU that the student laptop binaries (LMS application and our security features) may need to have a Security Design Review (SDR) conducted on them. What this means is that DOC and WaTech would perform a security review on the software for approval to be used by incarcerated individuals on the OSN. This was news to us as this hasn't come up previously. DOC is now in the process of figuring out if we need to have the review conducted and what that will mean for us utilizing student laptops on the OSN during the SDR process.
We have reached out to them (see message below) for a decision regarding this and have asked to hear back by Monday at noon. If we are going to need the SDR, we are looking at potentially having to wait 6-9 months for the process to complete. Due to this, if they decide that we can't utilize the machines on the OSN during the review, or they haven't responded back to us we will be planning on pushing back the full OSN launch to the end of Spring quarter.
What does that mean for most of the work that has been completed? Most of the work that went into preparing for the migration will still be utilized once we are able to bring the laptops onto the OSN. Servers would have needed to be setup and user accounts will still be needed. For sites that don't actively use Canvas on the desktops, you can leverage the OSN with desktops and then run a separate network (Legacy network) in which your laptops connect to the OPE server you have been using. You will need a way for staff to access this server to update their canvas courses\grade, but this way you could use desktops on the OSN and laptops as you have been using them.
For sites that do leverage the desktops for doing canvas work. You might want to hold on migrating your desktops and laptops till they are approved. Requiring faculty to jump between two different canvas courses to manage one class doesn't seem very feasible.
Please let me know if you have any questions, I'll keep everyone updated about the status of the decision once I hear back from DOC.
Thank you again for all the hard work on the project you have all done.
Message to DOC IT and CSU:
Good afternoon everyone,
I am writing to request your decision regarding the requirement of a Security Design Review for our Learning Management System (LMS) application within the Open Prison Education (OPE) platform. Our OSN Migration project is currently scheduled to go live at the end of March; however, this timeline is critically dependent on your decision.
If a determination cannot be made by Monday at noon regarding whether the LMS application requires a Security Design Review, we will need to delay our OSN Migration go-live until the end of the Spring quarter (late June). This delay is necessary due to scheduling constraints and resource availability within our Education IT team.
Please let us know how we can support you in reaching a timely decision. Your prompt attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your cooperation and support.
