Dear Workforce Education, Corrections, and COE Colleagues,
This is FYI about grants for CTCs from the Lowe’s Foundation. Our colleagues at the state’s retail industry association requested we share this with you. The timeline is tight   March 31. SBCTC has not investigated this grant program beyond noting that eligibility, goals, and the focus on diversity and inclusion appear aligned to system offerings and mission.

“The Lowe's Foundation is developing a community of skilled tradespeople to build and revitalize our homes, communities and infrastructure for the future. Since 2023, this national grant program is a $50 million commitment over five years that directly supports community and technical colleges and community-based nonprofit organizations to recruit, train and prepare 50,000 job-ready tradespeople to help fill the skilled trades gap…

Eligibility notes (excerpted from the guidelines linked below):

  *   Community and technical colleges that currently offer sustainable, scalable skilled trades education programs for postsecondary aged adults with an emphasis on appliance repair, carpentry/construction, electrical, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and/or plumbing.
  *   As part of their educational and/or support programs, recruit, train and prepare participants including, but not limited to, the following:   a. Women; b. People of color;  c. Individuals living in rural areas; or  d. Individuals who are justice-involved and/or participating in second chance programs.”

The application window is open until March 31, 2025. This round of Gable Grant applications is for community and technical colleges only. The next Gable Grant cycle for community-based organizations and nonprofits will open later this year.

The Lowe’s Foundation Gable Grants program is a 5-year, $50 million commitment to train 50,000 job-ready skilled tradespeople to build a stronger infrastructure that supports our communities for the long term. From 2023-2028, community and technical colleges and community-based nonprofit organizations across the country can apply for grants to recruit, train and employ the future skilled trades workforce.

Since 2023, the Lowe's Foundation has awarded over $34 million in Gable Grants to help educate and advocate for the next generation of skilled tradespeople by supporting training programs focused on carpentry and construction, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and appliance repair. This includes nearly $9 million awarded last month to 15 nonprofit organizations across the country, all aimed at supporting the skilled trades workforce.
