[Cato] [ITACCESS] Accessibility Article in EDUCAUSE Magazine

My plan is to respond with “Yes, we’re aware of accessibility making it to #2 of the teaching and learning issues survey. That’s a fabulous accomplishment and we look forward to IT taking the hint and working to ensure the technologies that we use to ensure students (and faculty and staff and community members) can do more than just take a well-designed course.” – Is that too too snarky? Or just snarky enough?

Yeah, making Educause people defensive was a fairly predictable result! 😈

I hope they didn't miss the point entirely.

There have been some interesting replies to our article on the EDUCAUSE list serve (all good so far!). I wasn’t aware that there’s a subgroup called ELI (EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative) that does an annual survey of teaching and learning. Accessibility and UDL have moved up to #2 this year! May be some good data to use to support our efforts. See two responses below.

Just a side note. The EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) runs an annual survey of the teaching and learning community to identify the key issues in that thematic domain. We’ve been running this survey since 2011. We invite all members of the teaching & learning to participate in the survey and not just those from EDUCAUSE member schools and not just folks in IT organizations. So the results (running on average ~900 returned surveys over the past 3 years) represent a diverse community.

2018 Key Issues in Teaching and Learning. Each year, ELI surveys the higher education community to determine key issues and opportunities in post-secondary teaching ...

As far as our Key Issues survey is concerned, the issue of Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has been steadily climbing:

2015       #12

2016       #7

2017       #4

2018       #2

Dear Amy, et al.::

Malcolm beat me to it with his post about Accessibility and UDL as #2 on the list of ELI Key Issues, but I will add that the entry includes links to some excellent articles:

I wanted to share an exciting article about accessibility that just came out in this month’s issue of EDUCAUSE Review. I was fortunate enough to co-write it with some ah-mazing colleagues that you may know: Jess Thompson and Tom Gibbons. (Yep, shameless self-promotion here.)
