Sent on behalf of Will Durden Director, Transfer Education and Transitional Services Dear Presidents, Yesterday we received communication from the Department of Education stating that the Department will not be issuing Grant Award Notifications (GANs) obligating Adult Education Basic Grants to states on July 1, pending further review of the program. This grant funds your Basic Education for Adults (BEdA) programs. As a result, until further notice, SBCTC is unable to fund FY26 applications for the BEdA Basic and Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) grants. Attached with this email is an at-a-glance of the expected award amounts approved this year by SBCTC. These are the planning amounts that your college was using to budget, and similar to the grant amounts you would have expected to receive. These federal grants comprise a portion of your BEdA (or similarly named) program budgets; each district makes its own choice as to how much additional state and local funds to allocate beyond the required match. We acknowledge that this news is surprising and disappointing, adding to an already stressful time of budget uncertainty. We do not yet know the ultimate outcome of this "review" of the federal Adult Education program or what this review ultimately means for your college or our system. Please know that we're looking into every option to respond to this last-minute notice, including working with our attorney general, and we'll continue to monitor the situation nationally. We will gladly take questions, and we will keep you updated as we learn more. We are notifying you first and will share with your commissions in 24 hours.
