I agree with Char. The proposed changes take away credits from the main content of the BAS degrees, thus making them more like transfer degrees and less like the foundation of these degrees-application. If we truly want our BAS students to graduate with specific career-applicable skills that lead to modern jobs, living wages, and even applicable graduate degrees, we need to make the path easier and more relevant. We already have academic and liberal arts pathways well-established.

Ultimately what is the goal of the proposed changes? Are we trying to increase critical thinking skills? Then let's add more critical thinking content to the applied courses. Are we trying to increase "soft" skills? Let's add more communication and writing content to the applied courses. Let us focus on our students' needs as well as those of our employment partners.

Warm regards,

Jorja

Thank-you, Charlene! I have the same concerns and would ask that we look at this further prior to voting. It will be worth our (our students') while.
I know we all have the heart of the students in mind but this change/suggestion is significant enough that I would really appreciate a clearer understanding.

Thanks all,

Brenda

Hello BLC Friends!

I know I am not part of BLC anymore, but I have some concerns. This does not make it more equitable for ctc students and does not allow for better BAS degree creation.

  1. This still forces us to require courses from all 5 distribution areas. This disadvantages ctc students! We have a deal with the regionals that if a student comes to us with a Bachelor's degree, we will accept it as a package deal and not break out the distribution courses. There are NUMEROUS BA and BS degrees that do not have required courses in all distribution areas. So now we are saying, if you are privileged enough to have a bachelor's degree already, then you are exempt from these forced buckets, but if you are at a ctc IN A PROF TECH PROGRAM THAT DOES NOT GENERALLY ALREADY REQUIRE THESE then you have to take them - even if you would get more benefit from taking 10 humanities and 0 natural science or 10 natural science and 0 humanities. Why is it not enough to say that they need to have 45 general education credits, and you choose the bucket? Why do they mandate the areas when our regional partners have more flexibility?
  2. The intention is to make BAS degrees for prof tech students - this version continues creating degrees built off of transfer degrees. BAS degrees are specifically to be built from applied science degrees - if that is the case, perhaps we look to the AAS-T degree requirements (Associate of applied Science - Transfer), which only require 20 general education courses. Why would we build Bachelor of Applied Science degrees off of transfer degree requirements when the legislature is clear that they are intended for prof-tech students and NOT transfer students. Many applied science degrees contain 5-10 gen eds - that means you have to leave room for an arbitrary 40-45 general education credits. For an applied degree! These are NOT Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degrees. They are APPLIED SCIENCE degrees - we cannot lose sight of that. (I realize that computer science and nursing are BS degrees - but that is NOT the majority of our degrees).
  3. The intention is to build bachelor's degrees that work for our students to transfer into Master's degree programs. By continuing to require these 5 buckets arbitrarily, it takes away our ability to build degrees that fit the needs of our Master's program partners.
  4. This is one of the parts that I am most concerned about, as I believe there are major unintended consequences here! Requiring an additional 20 credits of generally transferable courses as specified by the ICRC list. While the course list in the ICRC handbook does not specify that these are lower-division only courses, if you look in the comment section on this list, it is clear that many of these ARE lower division only. For example - MANY areas say ONLY introductory survey courses. Business says ONLY courses in introduction to business, business law, and statistical methods. That removes most if not all, upper-division business courses from the list. Accounting only allows for Accounting I, II, and III. Our Regional partners use upper division distribution courses that go beyond an introduction. This addition makes it HARDER to create the BAS degree because it removes your ability for most upper-division courses.

This is the FIRST TIME that IC has reviewed this. I realize it is taking a while, but please DO NOT just push this through because it is taking awhile. AND remember -we currently have "recommendations," so they are not requirements. We should take our time and get this right.

This makes the pathway harder, not easier and advantages transfer students, who are not our target population.
