Dear SBCTC Colleagues,

Today is the 11th anniversary of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, or GAAD!<https://accessibility.day/>

Have you heard of it before?

What is GAAD?

The purpose of this day is to increase disability awareness, to inspire conversations about digital/web accessibility, and the inclusion of people with disabilities.

What is Web Accessibility?

Web accessibility means that websites, apps, digital tools, and content are designed and developed so that people with disabilities can use them. More specifically, people with disabilities can:

  * Perceive, Understand, Navigate, and Interact with the Web; and

  *   Contribute to the Web

If you want to keep learning, check out this 4-minute video produced by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C): Introduction to Web Accessibility and Standards<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20SHvU2PKsM>.

What is SBCTC doing today?

Marilyn Varela, Greg Gamble, and I will deliver a Web Accessibility 101 training to SBCTC web developers and content managers. We have over 20 people registered! A guest presenter will join us to deliver a live demo of his screen reader navigating web content. Missed signing up? Don’t worry! The training will be recorded and shared internally on Staffnet.

What can you do to celebrate?

I am glad you asked, dear readers. Today is the perfect to sign up for the Accessibility Micro Courses<https://sbctc.badgr.com/public/issuers/k1IJMhPyRGOf-AsGWnlJmg/pathways> and earn your Accessibility Proponent Badge!<https://sbctc.badgr.com/public/pathway/5c6de118c949480e7545be09>

You can also view the content of these courses via the public facing SBCTC Library of Accessibility Resources.<https://sbctc.instructure.com/courses/1578604/>

Use your voice!

You can help advocate for advancing disability civil rights. The U.S. Department of Education announced its intent to strengthen and protect rights for Students with Disabilities by amending regulations Implementing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

“The Department’s Section 504 regulations were the first issued by the federal government that addressed the treatment of people with disabilities through a civil rights framework, rather than through solely a medical or vocational framework. In the years that followed, these regulations served as a model for the regulations of other federal agencies and were the foundation for many of the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.” (May 6th, 2022, U.S. Department of Education press release.)<https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USED/bulletins/3168169>

Learn more about how to submit your public comments<https://www2.ed.gov/policy/rights/reg/ocr/index.html?utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=> and strengthen protections for students with disabilities. Submit comments to: Section504 at ed.gov<mailto:Section504 at ed.gov> by June 2022!
