[ATcoord] Policy Swap?

Hi Kamran,

Thanks for sharing your idea and thoughts on the leadership surrounding this effort.

Since the State Board doesn't have an office that supports accessibility, we attempted to pull together some form of a centralized body to provide guidance once the State Board policy was approved (CATO<https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi_g47mjKzTAhUDzmMKHXXwC18QFggpMAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sbctc.edu%2Fabout%2Ftask-forces-work-groups%2Fcato%2F&usg=AFQjCNGH3GVLU-WYEOcVw6YkgROLOaYPiA&sig2=ADL3pCobXifbgq8QAbUt0g&bvm=bv.152479541,d.cGc> - the committee for accessible tech oversight). The goal was to work through the councils and commissions by having reps from the relevant groups serve on CATO and act as a liaison between their council/commission and CATO. Unfortunately, we're finding that it's not really working out that way. About half of the reps are engaged (to some extent) and a small group of us are carrying most of the load, and most folks are taking info back to their college, not their council/commission, thus information is not reaching the larger system.

And just for some additional clarification, Policy 188 was approved after CATO was formed. So, the original vision did/could not account for the fact that colleges would have a single point of contact who is coordinating the work - that's why there's sort of this (what I perceive to be a) disconnect between CATO and this larger group.

At our next CATO meeting I do believe we'll be discussing these very issues and I'm happy to take back any ideas or suggestions from this group.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I'd welcome others to chime in on how we can better support this work.

Jess

My fellow IT Accessibility Coordinators,

Good morning.

While I have been out of touch for some time busy with other tasks of my job -- I wanted to put in my piece by saying these are some great job opportunity and Policy 188 prep resources shared by Jess and Jeremy, respectively. Thank you!

After reading through TN Board of Regents job descriptions as shared by Jess [Accessibility Conformance and Design Specialist<https://www.higheredjobs.com/search/details.cfm?JobCode=176464166&Title=Accessibility%20Conformance%20and%20Design%20Specialist> & Assistive Technology Specialist<https://www.higheredjobs.com/search/details.cfm?JobCode=176464116&Title=Assistive%20Technology%20Specialist>] This would be so beneficial for us all if our State Board to developed something similar. This way we will have proper guidance and support coming from top down. I am willing to pull together a petition if others on this listserv are willing to put forward the effort in supporting this idea.

Please respond back with your thoughts, thank you!

Thanks, Jeremy!

Wow --- not only am I a huge fan of UMT's policy and procedures (and now yours!), but I especially want to point everyone to the language you added for document accessibility:

Electronic documents and printed materials should include one of the following Accommodation Statements:

  * Abbreviated Accommodation Statement (Bare Minimum for Posters/Flyers)

     * Persons with disabilities who anticipate needing accommodations or who have questions about physical access may call (telephone number of the event coordinator) in advance of the program (or film, event, etc.).

  * Fuller Accommodation Statement (This statement should be printed in any publication that describes a specific program or special event, e.g., seminar, film, speaker, performing arts series, employment programming, etc.)

     * Big Bend Community College encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation or have questions about the physical access provided, please call (telephone number of the event coordinator) in advance of your participation or visit.

  * FULL Document Accommodation Statement (This statement should be used in timeless documents, that are not subject to frequent change, such as MCOs)

     * If the format of any material in this document interferes with your ability to access the information, please e-mail us at accessibility at bigbend.edu<mailto:accessibility at bigbend.edu>, call us at 509-793-2222 or write to us at: Accessible Technology Team, Big Bend Community College, 7662 Chanute Street N.E., Moses Lake, WA 98837, ATTN.: Jeremy Seda

Mind if I share with some other groups, or would you rather I wait until it's approved?

Good afternoon Coordinators,

I think Big Bend's Policy is far enough in the draft process where I could share this with others.

I've adapted UMT's Electronic Information and Technology Accessibility (EITA) Policy and while this may look complete at first glance, I assure you, it's very much a draft. Some of the things the BBCC Accessible Technology Team is trying to figure out are:

* Dates/deadlines that are not overly aggressive, but do not allow folks to procrastinate on making their content accessible.

* Ensuring that any other referenced standard or guideline (i.e., DCMP Standards) do not create additional, unnecessary work.

* Proof-reading the document over and over to ensure that simple words are not making undesirable implications that we cannot live up to (i.e., "all", "entirely", "everything", etc.).

I hope this helps others and please let me know if you have any additional feedback that will improve BBCC's EITA policy.

Here is Whatcoms Policy, Procedure, Tech Request form (that starts all tech purchases campus wide), and our letter to vendors requesting VPATS.
Our accessibility tracking software is about ready to be shared. It allows end users to submit the software they use, allows us to submit VPATs and WCAG checklists, and allows us to track VPAT, WCAG, and Policy 188 requirements, notes, and feeds our public report. If you interested in seeing it I am happy to demo it and let anyone have the code if their interested.

Hi all,

Hopefully most of you have gotten your policies developed and approved. Anyone mind sharing their's with the group? A few folks have mentioned that they'd like to see what other schools have come up with policy-wise.

Cheers,

Jess
