founding in 1928, this commitment has enabled our institution to contribute to the strengthening of the Yakima Valley and the vibrant community we enjoy.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">That is why we are profoundly disappointed by the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ October 5, 2022 decision regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and the ongoing uncertainty
it creates for DACA recipients, their families, and our communities here in the Yakima Valley and across Washington state. To avoid harmful repercussions for Dreamers and for America, the urgency for Congress to act this year is higher than it has ever been.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">DACA was introduced as an executive order in 2012 to protect eligible immigrants who came to the United States as children to work legally and continue their studies without the debilitating fear of deportation.
Today, nearly 600,000 people are active in the DACA program, including many students here at YVC and Washington’s 33 other community and technical colleges.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">Students in the DACA program are part of the fabric of our college community. They are students, classmates, friends, neighbors, family members, coworkers and essential members of the communities we serve
across Yakima, Kittitas and Klickitat counties. Dreamers elevate our culture and our economy and create a brighter future for Washington.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">For nearly a century, Yakima Valley College has welcomed students from all backgrounds and held firmly to our belief that education be open, equitable and accessible to all students who enter our doors. This
will not change. Despite the continued legal rulings around DACA, our college remains resolute in support of DACA students as well as other Dreamers who do not have DACA protections. Our Dreamer students can continue to enroll, stay enrolled, graduate and
achieve the dreams that brought them through our doors.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt">But we also need the support of you and other federal legislators. For the good of our college, Washington state, and our entire nation, we must have a permanent solution that secures a pathway to citizenship
for Dreamers. We need a bipartisan legislative solution for DACA recipients and other Dreamers before the end of the year to ensure they can continue to stay and succeed in America. We know – without a doubt – that our quality of life here in Washington improves
when everyone has a lifetime of educational opportunity. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
