<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">In the meantime, we have started to contemplate this and I think there are a couple “first steps” that might be helpful.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">One might be to encourage mask-wearing …it’s short of requiring but also suggests that some folks may be wearing masks because it was encouraged, not because they are not vaccinated.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The second is general marketing/communication about assumptions and expectations for care and grace. That is, promoting the reality that wearing a mask does not mean that someone is or isn’t
vaccinated …it means they have chosen to wear a mask. Indeed, they may have a medical reason that prevents vaccination, may have children at home who cannot be vaccinated and want the added precaution, and/or may be making the decision to support and protect
others (since there are still unknows, particularly around variants). <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">I believe some regular campus communications in a variety of formats capturing some of these ideas could be helpful in this regard.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">I also believe that these responses will be racialized, both with regard to judging those with/without a mask and to “policing” and who is confronted and why (both on the part of students and
employees). We will, as always, need to intentionally state and model our expectations to support marginalized communities.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Colleagues, as we attempt to implement the Governor’s amended directive for higher education with its distinction between vaccinated and non-vaccinated campuses, a potential flashpoint was raised by one of our student leaders and I was
wondering if any of you have developed or are in the process of developing programming/training to address it. The flashpoint in question is the potential for vaccinated (and presumably unmasked) students creating a hostile learning environment for non-vaccinated
(and therefore presumably masked) students, or vice versa. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end or witnessed the giving of the old proverbial “stink eye” in a grocery store or other public venue, and perhaps even snide or aggressive comments, then you
know what I’m talking about. I assume that this will be an issue primarily, if not exclusively, encountered by those colleges that choose to designate themselves as vaccinated, which is the plan with both SCC and SFCC. So there you have it. Anybody have
