Dear Vice Presidents of Instruction and Student Services,

Over the past five weeks, the Direct Admissions Initiative work group assembled and worked weekly on the idea of a statewide admissions program for graduating seniors to our community and technical colleges in the state. With representatives
from the Washington Student Achievement Council, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, the work group accomplished three outcomes for a statewide direct admissions program for this year’s
graduating high school seniors and plans for the high school graduating class of 2021.

The three outcomes are as follows:

#1: A jointly written letter from the Executive Director of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC), Jan Yoshiwara, and Superintendent of the Office of Superintendent for Public Instruction (OSPI), Chris Reykdal to
all graduating high school seniors—congratulating them on their graduation from high school and welcoming them to their local community college as an option after graduation. This letter is anticipated to be sent this week to all of the Educational Service
Districts, Superintendents, and High School Principals in the state. We are encouraging the letter be shared with students electronically, but also through creative ways, like inclusion of the letter in diploma covers, passing them out to seniors when they
come to campus to clear out their lockers, etc.

#2: A Short Term Direct Admissions Initiative (or “what a college can do now toward recruitment of high schools students before Fall Quarter 2020): the work group crafted an acceptance letter template (containing financial resources like
the Washington College Grant) for colleges to personalize; examples of similar letter from Lake Washington Institute of Technology and Wenatchee Valley College; a sample student checklist once a student is accepted (thank you WVC for the example!); and a
communication planning document to assist in this work. The above noted items are attached to this email and are tools for your college to use in their own pursuit of local direct admissions work this summer.

#3: Long Term Planning for a Statewide Direct Admissions Initiative: the work group, knowing time was limited, has recommended reconvening in early October. At that time the work group will finalize the planning document tool for all colleges
engaging with this work, and will streamline the data sharing agreements needed to do this work on a large scale. In the meantime, a sub-committee will work on integrating this work into a greater outreach strategy.

The Direct Admissions Initiative supports the recommendations made in the final report for the Strategic Enrollment Taskforce submitted last year. We are excited by the conversation and innovation that this work has generated in such a
short amount of time. For example, Corrections Education will be providing admissions acceptance letters to all those upon release as part of their discharge paperwork. Please join me in thanking the members of the Direct Admissions Initiative work group in
