<p><strong><u>Title IX rule expected as soon as Wednesday, advocates say</u></strong><u><o:p></o:p></u></p>

<p>Advocacy and higher education groups said they expect Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to unveil a final rule on school sexual misconduct investigations as early as Wednesday.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>The department’s long-awaited Title IX regulation is set to overhaul how sexual assault and harassment accusations are handled on college campuses and K-12 schools. But it will also arrive as schools confront a coronavirus pandemic that has halted regular
classes and unleashed waves of budget crises. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p>An Education Department spokesperson declined to comment on Tuesday. Several advocacy groups sent out press releases offering to comment on the rule, saying they understood it would be released as soon as Wednesday.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Education and victims’ advocacy groups have urged the government to delay the final rule until the coronavirus national emergency is over. Meanwhile, some lawyers who represent students accused of misconduct say the Trump administration should go ahead and
issue the rule.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Colleges and schools would face stricter definitions of misconduct and new standards for launching investigations under the DeVos plan. Students would have to navigate changed requirements to file complaints, and alleged perpetrators may have an opportunity
to challenge their accusers, through lawyers or advisers.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Men's rights advocates and defense lawyers laud the new proposed rules, saying they represent a first step to level the playing field for men accused of misconduct on college campuses. They believe today’s Title IX investigation system is biased, and say
the new rule restores due process for accused offenders, as DeVos intends.<o:p></o:p></p>
