If you have councils or system groups that you think would have members who are interested in reviewing the proposed changes to the system-wide Smarter Balanced placement agreement, feel free to forward to them this message thread (starting with "The 2017 Legislature..." and cutting the prior material, just to reduce the scrolling and make it easier for them to follow :))

FYI, the deadline noted below is tight (1/23) as I'd like to be able to take the proposal to ATC at their meeting 1/25-26, then on to the IC and the WSSSC at their meetings. Joe and Joyce, I'm not sending this specific request to IC as I figure we'll just take the final recommendations to them in March. Given WSSSC meets in early February, though, it's your call, Joe, as to whether you want to share the draft with them now. I think if you can give them a head's up at the meeting that this is happening, we can run the final version by them via email later in February or early March...

The 2017 Legislature passed a law making significant changes to the K-12 assessment requirement, including shifting the timing of the high school assessment from the 11th grade to the 10th (that was already the case in practice for English but NOT for math). This shift means we need to revisit our placement agreements, so a work group met in December to recommend changes in the language in order to maintain the agreement.
We're seeking feedback on the recommendations before we take them to our system leadership for final approval; here's a link to the document with the proposed changes:

In addition to the recommendations the document includes a bit more background to the new law as well as a link to a  Google form for providing feedback; to provide more detailed background information, I've attached a brief slide show and an updated document from our original system work to review and implement this placement policy. For anyone interested in more details about the assessment itself (what the levels mean; definitions of scale scores and threshold achievement descriptors, etc.), I'd refer them to this page on the Smarter Balanced web site<http://www.smarterbalanced.org/assessments/scores/>. The deadline for input is January 23rd.

Feel free to share as widely as you'd like with colleagues who would like to provide some feedback; direct any questions they have about the background, substance, or rationale of the agreement language to me so I can continue building an FAQ list.
