Subject: Statewide Open Educational Resources Survey- Help Students Keep Book Prices Down!!

CUSP Members,

Attached you will find a link to a survey that has been developed by SBCTC Policy Associate, Dr. Boyoung Chae. She developed this survey in collaboration with our WACTCSA organization and is seeking our help in distributing it broadly to our student populations within our community and technical college system.

The survey is designed to quantify what students believe is a reasonable cost for class materials? It will help us meet a state requirement to notify
students which classes use low or no cost materials.

This also is a culminating action growing from the 2017-2018 WACTCSA Legislative Agenda Item, Textbooks and Open Educational Resources (O.E.R.s) Affordability and Accessibility, which reads "CTC students continue to hold concern about the prohibitive costs of educational resources for most courses offered in the CTC system. We want to ensure that CTC students have equitable access to affordable content to support their education. We appreciate former legislative action to support the development of OERs, and we support even more development of OERs in our CTC system. The legislature should establish greater incentives and funding for specific staff members on each campus to facilitate OER development." See the attached WACTCSA Legislative Agenda for a complete list of this year's legislative issues.

CUSP members, I am asking for your support in prompting your student government lead in a campus campaign to have students on your campus complete this survey. This would be an excellent and easy way for your teams to contribute important and needed student voices to an initiative designed to make the college experience more affordable.

We are trying to get as many CTC students to respond to this survey as possible by October 31st, 2017. Our target is 100% school participation and over 2000 students. That is roughly 60 students per campus. If your campus doubles or triples that number, our data will even be more reliable.

Here are a couple of ways to distribute this survey on campus:

* Promote the survey at Student Government and Club meetings during October

* Promote the survey alongside any voter registration or fall election activities

* Work with faculty members on your campus to push the survey to students through their on-line classes

* Locate your instructional media departments and see if they have a cadre for faculty members who are committed to Open Educational Resources and see if you can tap this group to have their classes take this survey

* Hold a textbook price awareness event on your campus and have students who come complete the survey

* Add the survey link to your department's social media pages, and promote students to respond as way to increase student voice on this issue.

Shortly, similar information will be released to students through the WACTCSA membership. If you have any questions about the survey and its uses please connect with our SBCTC partner, Dr. Boyoung Chae<mailto:Boyoung%20Chae%20%3cbchae at sbctc.edu%3e>. If you have any questions regarding this as a WACTCSA initiative please respond to me and our WACTCSA President, Cynthia Deville<mailto:cynthiagdeville at gmail.com>.

Thanks so much! Let's do this!!!
