[Wsssc] Homeless Students

Shoreline has developed a Food Pantry and we have a partnership with United Way, who provided two AmeriCorps members this year to work with students with food insecurity. One of our Neighborhood Associations has taken an enthusiastic role in providing food for the pantry. :).

Hi Joe,
We've worked hard to develop partnerships with community organizations that could provide services to students who might be homeless. We also have an expanded emergency fund program that a student could use for short-term housing costs.

Our students are allowed to use the showers in our gym without charge (there is sometimes a misperception that they need to pay the Fitness Center fee to use the showers, but that is not the case).

We do not have discounted meals or a food pantry yet (although we have discussed instituting the latter).

Colleagues: are any of you providing programs or services for homeless students? There is a new bill in the Legislature (Senate Bill 5903) that would - among other things - create a pilot program for two of our colleges to do so. Examples given in the bill are short-term housing, access to showers and laundry facilities, and discounted meals. I'm interested in knowing if we would be starting from scratch or if some of you are somewhat down this road already.

We need to produce a fiscal note (estimate of cost) by next Monday, so it would be great to hear back from you by then if you have anything to share. Thanks very much.
