[Wactclc-alma] Download Files from Primo Record?

Lily-- If you post the files on a Libguides page, you can use a single portfolio record in Alma and use the Libguides page permalink as the static URL in the Alma portfolio record. This approach might also let you provide helpful information about what software/apps people need to read the different files.

Although, as Jennifer Rohan pointed out, you may need to put something up to make people authenticate to get to the LibGuides page. Just because the files are DRM-free doesn't mean you can make them freely available to the whole entire Internet.

And yeah, We don't purchase any eresources which require us to host them on our own server/respository because we don't have the hardware and software to support it. If the vendor doesn't have their own platform or doesn't post on a third-party platform, it's a no-go for us.

Carleigh-- I think there are a lot of us who'd be interested in an institutional repository. IIRC, Centralia is running an Omeka server & I've sometimes wondered about asking to go in on it with them. :)

It will be ok!

This sounds like the beginning of an investigation into consortium IR services...

Thoughts anyone?

Kirsti, that's where one of the problem is. SPSCC does not have a digital repository system. I've been using Google Drive, which is pretty hodgepodge.

Hmm, I don't think I want three portfolio records for the same book in Alma. I might just link to a libguide page that has all three files on it to download. Still thinking about the ramifications of doing that if we purchase similar books in the future....

Be well,

Lily

Lily,

The WACTCLC Alma-Primo contract doesn't include Alma Digital.

Does your institution have any kind of digital repository system-- DSpace, Omeka, Fedora, contentDM?

If so, you can store all 3 files on your digital repository server.

No matter what, because you have 3 separate files with 3 different locations on whatever server you host them on, you'll need to have 3 separate portfolio records in Alma.

You could add a Public Note to each portfolio record saying which format each file was. That would let patrons decide which version they wanted to download.

I suppose you could put all 3 files in a folder on the server, and put the link to the folder in the Alma portfolio record, but I suspect that would be really confusing for patrons.

It will be ok!

Hi Everyone!

Is there a way to download files from a Primo record?

Here's the content of that strange request:

I just purchased a DRM-free book from Elsevier, which had three different files to download (epub, mobi, pdf). I'd like to somehow attach these files to Alma and have them show up in the Primo record of the book as links for students to download.

FYI, I've linked digital files I've stored in Google Drive before to Alma MARC records, but it's usually one file per record. This time, it'll be three files per record and I don't know how to do that, either. If I can figure a way to store files in Alma and have them show up in the Primo record, that would be better.

Alma has a digital resource management system called Alma Digital, but I don't think we have access to it.

Any ideas on how to deal with this problem also appreciated. Thanks!

Be well,

Lily Kun
