Hi Traci,

I've been on vacation for a few weeks & you may have resolved this problem. Just in case it's still up in the air...


Alma has 2 different kinds of fines that can be applied when an item is returned:

1) Replacement fee - this is a charge that Alma will automatically refund-- in whole or in part-- when a lost item is returned
2) Lost item fine - this is a charge that *doesn't* get refunded when a lost item is returned; it's intended to be used as a processing fee to cover the extra staff time & paperwork the library faces when trying to get lost items back.

We dropped all our lost item fines/processing fees when we switched to Alma.

They actually created *more* work for circ staff who were dealing with upset students. Plus, for some of our students, paying a lost item fine for something they returned may have meant the student didn't have enough money to eat that day. Not good.

Replacement fees and Lost item fines are controlled in separate lines in the Terms of Use page. See screenshot below.

The Lost Item Fine is set on a single line (orange box in the screenshot).

The Replacement fee is controlled by 2 lines-- one to set the fine amount, and one to set how much of the replacement fee is refundable when the lost item gets returned (blue box in the screenshot).

That said, if the issue is that you have a TOU with a replacement fee of $50 and you don't want people to get charged a replacement fee at all for those specific lost items, then your only option is to either create a completely new TOU with no replacement fee, or to manually waive every single replacement fee when those specific items go into lost status.

I don't consider manually waiving every single fee that gets created to be a viable option. ;)

Does anyone know if there is a way to set up a terms of use policy where items with a replacement cost of $50.00 or less won't receive a lost item fine?
