[Wactclc-alma] [EXTERNAL] - Swank?

In the past we subscribed separately to Academic Video Online (Formerly Alexander Street) but got very little views for a lot of money (18k for 2 campuses) - cancelled Spring 2021.

We are trying to consolidate our platforms as a district since we have so much crossover demand for streaming titles.
Current subscriptions/options:
AVON: Due to previous subscription, we have about 75 films between the two campuses that are perpetually owned.
Kanopy: We have perpetual rights to 3 titles, and lease 2 other titles.
Kanopy: We have a partnership with Spokane Public Library where all students have access to the full Kanopy Catalog (8 titles per month) but extra hoops for students.
Swank: SFCC has the top 500 for their Film Studies program, but not funded by the library. SCC only has 1 leased title at the moment. Trying to negotiate consolidate platforms and split costs (with an upcharge).
Digital Theatre Plus: Both campuses subscribe.

Amy, I agree - if we don't do away with something else, we will not be able to continue support for the new demand.

We currently have the following three streaming databases:

  1. Swank (Flex 75 model, annual subscription)
  2. Kanopy (documentary collection, plus Criterion Collection, the $2 per view model)
  3. Films on Demand (Master Academic Collection, annual subscription).

In early February 2020 we had one time money to use up so we decided to try Swank (Flex 50 model at that time) for a year and a put a modest deposit in Kanopy to draw from. The idea was that after one year we'd have usage stats to back up a budget request for permanent funding for streaming video. Then you know what happened a month later... and suddenly lots of faculty were relying on streaming video for their online classes. So far we have been able to maintain those two original databases and also add Films on Demand, with various pots of COVID relief funds that our college has received over the last two years.

I'm not sure what will happen when those COVID relief monies finally run out... the video databases are expensive and our regular library budget can't handle it without cutting something else significant like multiple journal databases.

I agree that investigating a consortium deal for streaming video would be a great next step for WACTCLC.

I haven't heard of that option, but it also sounds interesting! I'd be very interested in what types of film coverage other WACTCLC colleges are doing (Kanopy, AVON, etc.) and the scope of coverage (how many films annually - how are you budgeting, etc.)

This is a current conversation for us, as the demand is increasing, but our budget is not. It may also be of interest if we can find discounts as a group longer-term.

We do the "Flex 75" model from Swank (75 titles of our choice and 75 "swap outs" over the course of 12 months) so I have to maintain a curated Swank collection in Alma, rather than activate the entire collection from the CZ. However I do use the CZ portfolios for the films we do activate. I spot checked and am not seeing issues so far from Primo.

Evening y'all,

Does anyone else subscribe to Swank films? Our local collection of portfolios stopped working today in Primo. The films are still accessible through the Swank database.

Most of our portfolios haven't been modified since 2018, so it's really odd. Just wondering if anyone else was seeing the same thing!

I'm thinking of doing a fresh import of marc records tomorrow.

Thanks!
Lesley
