[Wactclc-alma] Primo CDI Access Issue

If the issue is with the citation metadata, and not the Alma configuration, then the best thing you can do is one a salesforce ticket, with the permalink to the citation, and ezproxy credentials so that ExLibris can fully test the link

Wade-- We've got the exact same problem with this exact same citation in Seattle Central's Primo. When I try to connect to the citation from North Seattle's or South Seattle's Primo, the link gets redirected through the proxy servers, as expected. As soon as I authenticate, I get the message:

Technical Difficulties
We encountered a problem in processing your request. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please try again in a few seconds.

When I try to connect to the citation from Seattle Central's Primo, I get taken to the Gale Power Search page which asks me to log in (which, of course, I can't).

I assume I need to file a case with both Gale and Ex Libris, yes?

Heather-- I've seen some discussion on the Alma-L list in the past month and in a recent ELUNA Learns webinar saying that the citation metadata that Gale sends to Ex Libris for inclusion in the Central Data Index is extremely messed up and causing all kinds of problems with article linking.

To the best of my knowledge, the only thing libraries can do with CDI citations is to either turn them on for specific electronic collections, or turn them off for specific electronic collections. Fixing bad citation records requires filing a case with Ex Libris (which we should do because if the citation is bad for us, it's bad for the other 2000 libraries that use Alma/Primo).

When we went live on Alma/Primo back in 2017, I remember that the Primo Central Index citations for the Gale products were so consistently giving us bad links that we ended up deactivating all the Gale products in PCI. I'm about ready to suggest to my colleagues here that we deactivate the CDI settings for our Gale electronic collections.

Also, when we had this exact problem with a Gale CDI citation a few weeks ago, Wade was really helpful with troubleshooting. What I learned at the time was:

  1. CDI citations have 2 types of URLs:

     *   Direct link
     *   OpenURL link

  1. Checking Which Link Type a Specific Record in Primo Is Using (OpenURL or Link in Record)<https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Primo/Content_Corner/Central_Discovery_Index/Documentation_and_Training/Documentation_and_Training_(English)/CDI_-_The_Central_Discovery_Index/090CDI_Tips_and_Tricks#Checking_Which_Link_Type_a_Specific_Record_in_Primo_Is_Using_(OpenURL_or_Link_in_Record)> in the CDI Tips and Tricks<https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Primo/Content_Corner/Central_Discovery_Index/Documentation_and_Training/Documentation_and_Training_(English)/CDI_-_The_Central_Discovery_Index/090CDI_Tips_and_Tricks> help page says that if the link has the wording "View in X (Subscribers only)" it means you have a direct link.
  2. If the CDI citation has a direct link to an article that's in one of your paid eresource packages/behind a paywall, you have to tell Alma to force the direct link to go through your proxy server first. Depending on the vendor, you may have to set things up so when the link gets redirected through your proxy server, it includes your customer ID number. This is what Wade is describing below.

Eresources, man!

Heather,

One issue (and maybe *the* issue) is that your Gale loc id isn't being included in the link from Primo, as highlighted below:

https://ezproxy.everettcc.edu/login?&url=http://link.galegroup.com/apps/doc/A19732214/1006766?sid=SERVICE_ID&u=LOCATION_ID

You need to go to:

Alma Admin / Discovery / Custom Linking for Central Index databases, and make sure that the table entry for "gale_linking" includes 'primo' for the service, and your institution locid for the loc id:

This parameter contains the URL template that Primo VE will use to access Gale resources that have been activated in CDI.
http://link.galegroup.com/apps/doc/{{control/sourcerecordid}}/{{control/addsrcrecordid}}?sid=<Service_ID>&u=<LOCATION_ID<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flink.galegroup.com%2Fapps%2Fdoc%2F%257b%257bcontrol%2Fsourcerecordid%257d%257d%2F%257b%257bcontrol%2Faddsrcrecordid%257d%257d%3Fsid%3D%253cService_ID%253e%26u%3D%253cLOCATION_ID&data=04%7C01%7C%7C98349215186544e21c3408d9a86bf579%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C637726003902105503%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=O865o4inviulMSEkRDpotA5GbxRZVSVsGfTK6h24lFo%3D&reserved=0>>
To enable this template, replace the following placeholders:

  *   <Service_ID> - Replace with primo.
  * <Location_ID> - Replace with the location ID provided by Gale.

as described here:

Configuring the Central Index Linking Templates for Primo VE - Ex Libris Knowledge Center (exlibrisgroup.com)<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fknowledge.exlibrisgroup.com%2FPrimo%2FProduct_Documentation%2F020Primo_VE%2FPrimo_VE_(English)%2F120Other_Configurations%2FConfiguring_the_Central_Index_Linking_Templates_for_Primo_VE&data=04%7C01%7C%7C98349215186544e21c3408d9a86bf579%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C637726003902105503%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=EFzVOKe%2FuJEOkSu3soaTMxKLhdhhK5s74kqTeDSH8OI%3D&reserved=0>

I don't know if that's the only issue, but it's definitely one issue.

Hey Heather!

What Gale collection do you have activated in CDI?

I think I found the citation at Pierce<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsbctc-piercecollege.primo.exlibrisgroup.com%2Fpermalink%2F01STATEWA_PIERCE%2F12mqddp%2Fcdi_gale_infotracacademiconefile_A19732214&data=04%7C01%7C%7C98349215186544e21c3408d9a86bf579%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C637726003902125420%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=vZgvv11yonLILdVvyruTH0RVrehO589ukhjBgW9eQ9o%3D&reserved=0> and it's connecting through Gale In Context: Biography.

I also ran the new CDI Analysis on yours and it's definitely different than Pierce. It looks like your record is coming through ProQuest?

Hope this helps!

Hello, dear colleagues.

I had a student share a link to a Primo citation that isn't correctly connecting to our Gale subscriptions. Here's the example Primo Record<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flinkprotect.cudasvc.com%2Furl%3Fa%3Dhttps%253a%252f%252fsbctc-everettcc.primo.exlibrisgroup.com%252fpermalink%252f01STATEWA_EVERETT%252f1qv5jiv%252fcdi_proquest_journals_215686785%26c%3DE%2C1%2Cb02ESimOm3767MEXstmCP-vTIXEWNE9PzQ5EziGPq5yQGxlIG2xdCHzslH38D_FajHsiKSQRgh5NDOLKWAoLpmb2zJar61m9_Wb6wWgb_w%2C%2C%26typo%3D1&data=04%7C01%7C%7C98349215186544e21c3408d9a86bf579%7C02d8ff38d7114e31a9156cb5cff788df%7C0%7C0%7C637726003902125420%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=L2m7Rsn5AGbPvDeLNu%2FPu1uLp8Lf6q1f9KqydjJ%2FyXg%3D&reserved=0>. I was able to direct-search Gale Powersearch and get the article. Unfortunately, the access link in the Primo record appears to derive from CDI, not from our Alma activations.

Do we have the ability to configure CDI activations? Perhaps in the Primo VE interface? If not there, then perhaps in Alma in another way than what I'm currently doing? I've searched our Alma activations and I can't find the specific collection listed in the example record.

Thanks very much for your consideration and advice!
