Ah, a different letter.

I was testing with the activity letter, and my solution works as you describe. Use preferred name first, then default name.

Let me look at the loan receipt letter. Might be something different about it (or about the letter I was testing with).

Hi, Wade -

There's just one problem with that - if we don't have a preferred first name, nothing shows up in the name field (except the hyphen).  (See screenshot below of email for item I just checked out to myself.)  What I was hoping someone might have developed  was some kind of "use preferred name, and if none, then use first name" type code.

I figured this one out.



In the letters components configuration for mailreason.xsl and senderreceiver.xsl, you simply replace on the template tab the name references as shown below.



With these changes, if a preferred first or preferred last name exists in the user record, the preferred version will be used. Otherwise, the default version will be used.



Laura, I already made this update in your Alma instance.



Senderreceiver.xsl



Change:



<xsl:value-of select="receivers/receiver/user/first_name"/> <xsl:value-of select="receivers/receiver/user/last_name"/>



To:



<xsl:value-of select="receivers/receiver/user/preferred_first_name"/> <xsl:value-of select="receivers/receiver/user/preferred_last_name"/>



Mainreason.xsl



Change:



<xsl:value-of select="receivers/receiver/user/first_name"/>



To:



<xsl:value-of select="receivers/receiver/user/preferred_first_name"/>

Hi, All -



Has anyone come up with an elegant solution for telling Alma to address a letter to a patron's preferred name, but if there is no preferred name then to use the patron's first name?



We've gotten our letters to use the patron's first name. But it will insist on using that name instead of the preferred name, and we would rather not use a non-preferred name if they've gone to the trouble of giving us their preferred one.



Any hints would be appreciated.
